Cincinnati raced out to a 34-0 lead in the early part of the second quarter before Toledo mounted a great comeback. After getting as close as 41-34, Toledo was shut down and Cincinnati used a fourth quarter surge to win 58-34 in a wild affair.

It did not take long for Gunner Kiel, who transferred from Notre Dame, to make his presence felt in his first collegiate start. He went 2 of 3 for 69 yards with all three passes in the direction of Mekale McKay. Kiel's pass to McKay from 17 yards out capped off the drive.

Kiel hit his second touchdown pass of the first quarter to Max Morrison from 22 yards while kicker Andrew Gantz missed the extra point off the goal post to make the Bearcats lead 13-0. Toledo had a chance for points, but Jeremiah Detmer's 28 yard field goal was off the goal post as well and was no good.

The score was 20-0 by the end of the first quarter when Tion Green ran the ball in from 4 yards out. It got worse for Toledo when Kishon Wilcher fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the ball was recovered by Cincinnati's Eric Wilson. Two plays later, Kiel hit Chris Moore for an 8 yard strike and Cincinnati led 27-0.

Toledo went as far as the Cincinnati 33 yard line, but Logan Woodside's pass was incomplete. It took all of three plays for Cincinnati to make it 34-0 with Rod Moore's 2 yard touchdown run. At this point, the game looked to be done and dusted.

Toledo finally got on the board and started their comeback with a 9 play, 85 yard drive capped off with Kareem Hunt's 3 yard touchdown run. Cincinnati came right back with Kiel finding Nate Cole for the 11 yard touchdown pass and the score was at 41-7 with a little over 2 minutes remaining in the first half.

Toledo answered right back to give them a bit of momentum heading into halftime. Logan Woodside hit Alonzo Russell for a 38 yard touchdown to make it a 41-14 score at the break.

Woodside and Russell connected again to start the second half, this time from 54 yards out to make it a 41-21 Cincinnati lead. After a stop by the Toledo defense and a good return from Corey Jones, Woodside let Jones cap the drive off with a 13 yard touchdown pass.

Another Toledo stop eventually led to a 23 yard field goal from Jeremiah Deter to make it 41-31. Toledo added another field goal from Detmer to start the fourth quarter from 36 yards and the score was 41-34. That was as close as it got for the Rockets.

The Bearcats finally responded with a scoring drive after that field goal. Kiel came out of the locker room and led Cincinnati to a touchdown with an 18 yard pass to Alex Chisum. Cincinnati's next drive yielded a 34 yard field goal from Gantz to make it 51-34.

Kiel capped of his great game with a 22 yard touchdown pass to Shaq Washington to make it 58-34.

Kiel finished the game by going 25 of 37 for 418 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also had 4 carries for 24 yards. Munchie Legaux did see a bit of playing time in the second quarter and went 4 of 5 for 18 yards. Legaux made his first appearance since tearing his ACL and PCL against Illinois in 2013.

Hosey Williams led the Bearcats in rushing with 14 carries for 103 yards.

Kiel's top target was Mekale McKay with 9 catches for 175 yards and a touchdown. Kiel threw his 6 touchdown passes to 6 different receivers (McKay, Washington, Morrison, Chisum, Moore, and Cole). Johnny Holton was the second leading receiver with 3 catches for 68 yards. Shaq Washington had 4 catches for 54 yards and a touchdown while Max Morrison caught 4 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.

Toledo moved the ball well against the Cincinnati defense the entire game, though they did not always gets the points to show for it. Logan Woodside went 27 of 40 for 322 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Toledo's rushing attack had 240 yards on the ground led by Kareem Hunt's 12 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown. Marc Remy finished with 11 carries for 80 yards.

Alonzo Russell caught 5 passes for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns. Corey Jones caught 11 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown while Justin Olack caught 5 passes for 64 yards.

Toledo finished with 563 yards of offense, which was very close to Cincinnati's output of 584 yards.
