England have fresh injury concerns as plans for Liam Plunkett's arrival in South Africa have been delayed due to injury.

The 30-year-old was called up as a replacement for the injured Steven Finn for the limited-overs squads after the 26-year-old had to withdraw from the touring party due to injury. The Middlesex man sustained a strain to his left side during the visitors' series-clinching seven-wicket victory at the Wanderers.

The Yorkshire pace bowler picked up a muscle strain to his left thigh after playing two matches for the England Lions in the UAE. He was subsequently ruled out of the opening One-Day game against Pakistan A in Dubai on Wednesday, but will have a further fitness test on Thursday to determine the extent of the injury.

Plunkett's South Africa ommission

It was a shock when Plunkett originally missed out on selection for the South Africa tour after being in the squad for the tour to the UAE, where the Three Lions lost 2-0 to Pakistan, despite not featuring in any of the three Tests. Plunkett has not played in the longest format since taking four wickets and hitting his maiden Test fifty in England's 95-run defeat to India at Lord's in 2014 with injury ruling him out of the remainder of the series.

Plunkett was dropped in favour of Derbyshire's Mark Footitt - who is yet to have been handed his debut cap - for the tour to South Africa. Footitt has 276 First-Class wickets at an average of 25.68.

Plunkett's ODI history

Plunkett has not played an ODI since the fourth match of England's series against Australia last summer. He claimed 2/47 as the hosts won by three wickets at Headingley.

The former Durham bowler returned to the ODI set-up earlier in the 2015 summer, after being recalled for the series against New Zealand, taking 0/37 on his return before 1/71 in the second game as injury ruled him out of the remaining three games.

Plunkett has 45 wickets in his 34 ODIs at an average of a shade over 35 with best-bowling figures of 3/24 against Australia in 2007.
