Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer has admitted that he is frustrated by his lack of playing time this season but says he is willing to wait for his chance to play regularly.
Wimmer joined Spurs last summer from Cologne and had a positive debut season with the club. The problem that he faces though is that Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have built-up such a strong partnership it is really difficult for him to replace them.
Wimmer waiting patiently for some game time
The Austrian's only appearance came in the 5-0 win at home against Gillingham in the EFL Cup last month and he wants to increase his game time as soon as possible but understands he must be patient for his chance.
Speaking to Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung, Wimmer said that "after last season, where I played towards the end quite frequently" due to a long-term injury to Vertonghen, "I'm already down on other expectations for this season" as it's incredibly difficult for him to watch on from the sidelines and not play.
Wimmer continued on to say that his injury has taken him "back a bit" but now that he is fully fit and raring to go he is "patiently waiting for my chance" to play and it is important as he says he "always stays positive."
The defender says that "the feedback from the club is always that they are happy" with him and that they "see the future with me" so therefore he hopes that he will be playing sooner rather than later.
Wimmer frustrated by how far he has falling down the pecking order
In recent weeks, it also seems that Wimmer has fallen behind academy graduate Cameron Carter-Vickers in the pecking order which only adds to the frustration even more. Wimmer though is staying positive and is hopeful that he can finally get some game time after the international break with the team playing six games in 23 days.
Wimmer on his chances of playing after the international break said "we will see what happens in the next few weeks" as there are plenty of games so he says he will see "how much I start" to whether it will come to more of a concern that he might have to leave the club.
