Manchester City have completed the £49 million pound transfer for Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling on a five-year contract deal believed to be worth up to £200,000-a-week.

After months of speculation, press analysis and heavy criticism over his future, Sterling has finalised his move away from the Reds - the club who gave him the platform to flourish in the Premier League, three seasons ago.

His new club announced the deal on Tuesday and the England international, who is still only twenty years old, will wear the number seven shirt at the club.

He will join up with his new team-mates and staff on their pre-season tour of Australia; after an agreement in principle was made between the two clubs on Sunday afternoon. The deal is initially £44million pounds, then a further £5million pounds in add-ons.

However, the Reds are believed to only be pocketing £36million from the transfer. Queens Park Rangers, the side he left at the age of 15, will get just under £9million pounds as part of a transfer clause in his contract - as he did not play a professional game for the side despite featuring in their youth ranks.

Can Sterling live up to his potential?

It's clear that Sterling has the talent, and world-class potential, to flourish for many years to come at the highest level. He won last year's prestigious Golden Boy award, for the best player under-21 across Europe.

Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Sergio Agüero, Isco and Paul Pogba, but to name a few, have all won the award at some stage in their respective careers.

He has also been named as Liverpool FC Young Player of the Year for the last two consecutive years.

Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini had this to say, after the announcement: "Sterling is one of the best attacking players in world football, and I am very much looking forward to him joining out squad out in Australia later this weekend."

He continued, saying the 20-year-old is a "great player with outstanding ability", and reassured sceptical fans in regards to the price-tag by stating they'd be "very excited about seeing him in action for the team."

Move brings an end to poisonous transfer saga

The way in which Sterling handled the transfer saga, as it were, was not particularly fitting for a player of his quality - especially at his age as a role model figure for footballers.

He frustrated Reds' fans with the way in which things were dealt, including the infamous BBC interview, his agent's comments, and more recently, refusing to go on the club's pre-season tour.

Although a deal was eventually agreed between the two clubs, many other European sides were interested in his services, but not prepared to spend that much for his services.

At twenty, he's still got plenty to show for himself, and City will be taking a calculated risk on a talented player - who ultimately left a bad taste in Liverpool's mouths.
