The 52-year-old ex-Real Madrid and England assistant manager was responsible for the promising youth programme installed by Roma manager Luis Enrique, scouting and bringing in young, exciting talents such as the flamboyant Erik Lamela.

AS Roma's General Manager Franco Baldini has resigned from his post.

Baldini's job at England was to manage scouting, and also manage support staff such as physiotherapists, kit men and the like to make the job as easy as possible for Fabio Capello.

Baldini has been on Tottenham Hotspur's radar for a while, with rumours circulating that he had already agreed a deal, or at least that André Villas-Boas was very interested. AVB is reported to be very interested in a continental managment structure at White Hart Lane. Baldini will take charge of Tottenham's scouting and transfer policy.

Speaking last month about the role of technical director, Villas-Boas said: "It's something that I am used to working with.

"Since the first day I told the club that it's somebody who is extremely important in my view to the structure of the club."

This move should be an exciting one for Spurs fans, considering Baldini was responsible for bringing in players to Real Madrid such as a young Gonazalo Higuaín, Brazil internatonal left-back Marcelo, and one Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Baldini is also said to have had a lot of sucess with transfer dealings in Brazil, making that long sought after Leandro Damião move a little more likely.
