West Brom's clash with Southampton at The Hawthorns ended goalless at after both teams failed to excite.

Team News

There was a debut for Southampton in the form of new signing from Celtic Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender replaced Maya Yoshida in the centre of defence.

Two other changes were made to the team as Victor Wanyama, along with Jay Rodriguez, was drafted into the starting eleven after a move to Spurs failed to materialize. Exciting Senegalese Sadio Mane was left on the bench after his long trip back from his home country.

West Brom also had a new centre back starting for them with Jonny Evans signing from Manchester United at the end of the transfer window. Rickie Lambert was also brought into the starting lineup to play against his former club for the first time since joining in the summer.

First Half

The Baggies started on the front foot, taking the game to the Southampton defense from the get go. It didn't take the Saints long to settle into the game though, as they started to dominate possession and subsequently whip in a few dangerous crosses towards Boaz Myhill's goal.

The away side's methodical style made for a fairly slow opening quarter of the game with chances at a premium.

The only incident of note was a penalty shout for West Brom. Saints defender Matt Targett mis-timed his tackle against pacy winger Callum McManaman and failed to make contact with the ball. The referee controversially waived it off as the replays showed the Southampton left-back didn't make contact with his fellow English youngster either.

The Saints looked most dangerous when whipping balls into the box. The first real chance of the game came way in the 36th minute when Tadić's inch-perfect left-footed cross from the right wing found Jay Rodriguez, who's header went just wide of Myhill's left hand post.

Similar looking crosses by Dusan Tadić were a theme throughout the first half. However, Saints' attackers, including the incumbent Graziano Pellè, failed to capitalize on them.

The tepid first half came to a close with neither side particularly impressing.

Second Half

The second half started in similar fashion to the first half with neither side willing to commit bodies forward.

Solomon Rondon missed West Brom's best chance of the game in the 53rd minute. The Uruguayan brought the ball down well, only to see his effort sail wide.

Saido Berahino, another player who had a projected move to Tottenham fall through, was left on the bench by Baggies boss Tony Pulis. The young striker came on to replace Lambert after 54 minutes of play.

His introduction was met with a mixed reaction from the West Brom faithful, after he publicly stated his desire to leave and claiming he wouldn't play for the Baggies again on social media.

The home side looked slightly more dangerous with Berahino's introduction until James McClean came on to replace the dangerous McManaman at the hour mark.

The Saints slowly crept back into the game thereafter, with Mane finally coming on to replace the hard working Rodriguez on 66 minutes.

Southampton continued to enjoy the majority of possession but looked out of ideas in the final third. Although Mane's introduction added a bit of flair to their attack.

The ever-present Mane noticeably made the Saints look more dangerous going forward, but they still struggled to create any clear-cut chances.

West Brom's third and final change came in the 85th minute when the often-injured Jonny Evans had to leave the game with another injury. He was replaced with Jonas Olsson.

The game disappointingly ended in a stalemate, with neither side having much to take away from the game.

The biggest storyline in this mundane affair may be the Southampton attackers' failure to make the most of Tadić's impressive crossing, with Pelle in particular underwhelming.

Southampton take on Manchester United next at St Mary's, while the Baggies travel to Aston Villa in a midlands derby on Saturday.
