Newcastle United have failed to progress past the third round of the FA Cup in each of their past three seasons, but manager Steve McClaren is determined to better their fortunes this campaign.

The Newcastle boss has insited his team "need a win" as they travel to Watford for an all Premier League tie.

The Magpies are expected to put out as strong a team as possible, with McClaren determined to create a winning momentum amongst his players, beginning on Saturday.

In the Premier League, Newcastle find themselves in the relegation zone, a position many would have expected Saturday's opponents Watford to be in after their promotion from the Championship last season.

The Hornets, however, have surpassed all expectations and are sitting comfortably in ninth place. Their FA Cup form is much less impressive, though, having won just one of their last six FA Cup games.

Who is likely to miss out?

Quique Flores has promised to put out a "competitive" Watford side for the visit of Newcastle. But the Spaniard has hinted that changes are likely in order to rotate his squad.

If changes are to be made, it is expected that Troy Deeney or Odion Ighalo could be the men to miss out.

Summer signing Obbi Oulare could make his debut for the Hornets should either Deeney or Ighalo be rested.

Nathan Ake remains suspended while Tommie Hoban and Joel Ekstran are out with groin and knee injuries respectively.

McClaren has insisted he will field a "strong team" for his side's trip to Vicarage Road but admitted the FA Cup is "not [Newcastle's] main target this season."

The 54-year-old may be without midfielder Jack Colback after the 26-year-old picked up a hamstring injury in last weekend's defeat to Arsenal.

Newcastle could however be boosted by the returns of midfielder Rolando Aarons and striker Emmanuel Riviere after lengthy injury lay-offs.

While both managers will be keen to see their side progress, the Premier League mid-week fixtures will be in the back of their minds.

Newcastle take on Manchester United on Tuesday whereas Watford face Southampton the following day.
