Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce began his pre-match media briefing by discussing the upcoming transfer window.

The Magpies boss did mention that he believes some deals are in the pipeline - fresh after rumours came out this week about Newcastle being interested in signing Motherwell's David Turnbull and Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson.

"We’ve got one or two things in the fire right now, let’s hope we can pull them off.

"As soon as it opens, we’ll go to work.

"My job is to keep knocking on the door and asking the question.

”I really want us to improve and get better.

"We need to improve the squad but also ensure we get value for money," said Bruce.

  • A look ahead to Liverpool

Newcastle's opponents on the final day of the Premier League season are none other than the league champions, Liverpool.

Jürgen Klopp's Reds lifted the title on Wednesday after their 5-3 victory at home to Chelsea.

Steve Bruce hopes that the Liverpool players have been celebrating so much that it affects their performance at St James' Park on Sunday.

"I hope that they've been partying for three nights after they lifted the trophy and I hope there's a few of them who are worse for wear!

"Knowing their professionalism, I don't think they will be."

  • Midfield duo could return, but another defender may miss out

The Magpies head coach discussed the growing injury list, as he revealed that Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff could make a return to the squad for Sunday.

Full-back Emil Krafth has been revealed as a doubt for the clash with Liverpool after he sustained a recent ankle injury.

“We might have Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff available.

"We’ve got a problem with Emil Krafth who took a nasty whack to his ankle so we’ll see how he is over the next 24 hours.”

Five of six first-team centre backs were injured for Newcastle's match against Brighton on Monday, and it was revealed that none of them will make a return to the side for the Liverpool game.

"Unfortunately we won't have any of the defenders back.

"We've got six centre backs on the books and five of them or injured.

"The one stand-in we put there is injured too so it's Sod's law."

"Fabian Schär has an operation this afternoon so we're hoping 6-8 weeks for him and we hope he'll be there or thereabouts when the season restarts.

"That goes for Jamaal Lascelles and all of the injured players too," said Bruce regarding the sidelined quintet.

  • Kell Watts to feature?

Academy graduate Kelland Watts was named on the substitutes' bench for Newcastle 0-0 draw against Brighton on Monday.

Steve Bruce revealed that there is a 'possibility' that the 21-year-old could make an appearance on Sunday.

"He hasn't played for something like five months so it'd be a big ask.

"He was out on loan and did very well and we're pleased with his progress."

  • Rose, Bentaleb and Lazaro to sign permanently?

Sunday's game against Liverpool is potentially the final games in a Newcastle shirt for Danny Rose, Nabil Bentaleb and Valentino Lazaro - as they are set to return to their parent clubs.

Bruce did not rule any of the loaned trio returning to Tyneside on a permanent deal this summer.

"We'll have the conversations after the season finishes.

“The three of them have certainly helped us.

"We haven't had a left-back so we brought Danny in.

"Bentaleb has come back very well.

"Lazaro hasn't had the game time but I've been quietly pleased with him."
