Manchester United were knocked out of the Europa League after they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Spanish side, Sevilla

Sunday night's knockout defeat was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's third semi-final loss this season. United have ended the season without a trophy for the third season in a row which has not happened since 1987-89.

  • Solskjaer explains where it went wrong

United started the tie incredibly well when Bruno Fernandes put his side ahead from the penalty spot. Solskjaer's side failed to take advantage of great periods of play throughout the game which ultimately cost them the result.

Solskjaer admitted United let Sevilla "off the hook": "It's of them where if you take your chances you win comfortably. When you don't take them it's going to be hard. Some spells today showed this group of players will have to learn.

"I can't fault the boys, we had 46 shots in these two games. 22 or 23 on target and both goalkeepers played fantastic. But then we let them play too much in periods. We definitely let them off the hook."

The Norweigan boss was also unhappy at the way his side conceded the two goals: "The whole run up to the goal is disappointing. The recovery runs aren't good enough. We should have stopped the cross, maybe. Two crosses to concede from is disappointing," Solskjaer said.

Nonetheless, Solskjaer did congratulate Sevilla and goalkeeper Yassine Bounou after he played a vital role: "Fantastic performance from their keeper, he made some fantastic saves. When you put crosses into the box and score two, maybe you can call them easy goals."

  • The new season is around the corner and United have work to do

When the transfer window opens United attract attention from all over the world and rumours spread like wildfire - this summer has been no different.

When asked about potential signings, Solskjaer said: "I cannot say when or if transfers will be done. We just have to be 100% sure when we make those deals."

Squad depth has also been an issue for Solskjaer this season and it reemerged in the semi-final when he took 87 minutes to make a change.

"We definitely need to improve if we want to move up the table and take steps in the cups," Solskjaer said. "We are always looking to improve. It's not about marquee signings, it's about quality. We need the right player with the right personality.

"We need to strengthen the squad of course because it is going to be a long season. But we need to improve day in day out."

United have just under four weeks until the new Premier League season begins, however, they do have until October to bring in new signings.
