Southampton crashed out of the FA Cup third round with a disappointing defeat at home to Crystal Palace in an all-Premier League tie which could have gone either way.

Palace were ahead at the interval thanks to Joel Ward's close-range tap-in before Oriol Romeu equalised just after half-time, but Wilfried Zaha's second-half volley was enough to see the visitors through to the fourth round.

The hosts hit the woodwork twice in the last five minutes of the game and had chances to draw, if not win the game, but in the end it was another poor result to consign the Saints to another season without silverware.

Changes for both sides

Saints boss Ronald Koeman made four changes from the side which lost at Norwich City in the Premier League the previous weekend, with the return of Sadio Mané in place of Victor Wanyama the most noteworthy change.

Alongside the Senegal international, Maya YoshidaMatt Targett and Romeu came into the fold with Ryan BertrandJames Ward-Prowse and Dušan Tadić dropping out.

There were three changes for Palace, meanwhile, with Joe LedleyJordon Mutch and Yohan Cabaye coming into the midfield.

Long threatens from the off

The hosts went straight on the front foot from kickoff with young defender Targett looking to find Shane Long with a long pass, but the ball skidded harmlessly through to visiting goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

Southampton had the better of the opening exchanges and Long was denied by Hennessey just moments later after attempting to take the ball round the former Wolves goalkeeper, while Steven Davis had a shot deflected wide shortly after missing the target with a header.

Palace strike first through former Pompey man Ward

However, despite Southampton's dominance in the first half hour of the game it was Palace who opened the scoring through former Portsmouth defender Ward.

It was an ex-Saint who teed him up, with Jason Puncheon taking the ball off a Southampton defender and darting inside before laying the ball off to Ward for a simple close-range finish.

Puncheon almost had a second assist to his name ten minutes later as his excellent corner was glanced just wide by the head of Scott Dann, while Mané and Davis combined well before Romeu spurned the last chance of the half for the hosts.

Romeu levels for Southampton after half-time

However, it took little over five minutes of the second half for the former Barcelona midfielder to make amends by bringing the scores level.

Cuco Martina brought a good save out of Hennessey but the goalkeeper could only push the ball into the path of the alert Romeu, who reacted quickest to stab the ball into the unguarded net.

Soon after, Mané was denied by the offside flag as a shot from Long rebounded to him after a good save from Hennessey, while Pape Souaré was unable to make the most of substitute Bakary Sako's excellent switch of play, ballooning his cross straight out of play for a goal kick.

Zaha volley restores Palace's lead

With 20 minutes to play, though, Palace took the lead for the second time with a rebound effort of their own. Puncheon was involved again as his thunderous strike from the edge of the area was parried by Maarten Stekelenburg, with Zaha pouncing to arrow a volley home and send the boisterous visiting supporters into raptures.

Saints did their best to come straight back into the game and Juanmi was denied his first goal for the club only by another excellent low save from Hennessey.

Mané and Long both saw yellow for frustrated fouls  in the final ten minutes of the game, with Southampton's bluster failing to materialise into any clear goalscoring opportunities.

Saints hit the woodwork twice at the death

However, on the stroke of the 90th minute, Saints fans were left wondering how they hadn't pulled the game level.

Two corners from substitute Ward-Prowse were delivered dangerously into the area. From the first, José Fonte slammed his header off the bar and from the second, Virgil van Dijk looked to have clawed back a replay but saw his header deflect to safety off the upright.

There were still five minutes of injury time to play and Mané headed over the bar from Long's cross, before Hennessey tipped a Ward-Prowse free kick just past the post with almost the last touch of the game.

The result continues Koeman's side's terrible recent form, with the 4-0 thrashing of Arsenal the only win in six games now, with Southampton losing the other five.
