Ana Ivanovic will be representing Serbia in her second appearance at the Olympic Games in Rio, and the former world number one has been having a torrid season, which has seen her drop out of the top 20 in the rankings in recent months.

Ivanovic's first round opponent will be Spain's ninth seed, Carla Suarez Navarro, who will be representing her country in her third Olympic Games.

Suarez Navarro, currently ranked at number 12 in the world, has had a good 2016 campaign and has been the beneficiary from the withdrawals of Simona Halep amid fears of the Zika virus, Victoria Azarenka due to pregnancy and Dominika Cibulkova due to injury.

Ivanovic's Olympics history

The Serb was due to participate in the Olympics in Beijing back in 2008, the same year that she won her first and so far only Grand Slam singles title at the French Open and became the world number one for the first time in her career.

However, Ivanovic was due to be the top seed in Beijing but she withdrew from the event due to a thumb injury.

Four years later at the Olympics in London held at Wimbledon, Ivanovic was seeded 11th and was able to represent Serbia in her debut appearance at the Olympic Games.

The former world number one defeated the United States' Christina McHale 6-4, 7-5, and followed her victory with a win over  Britain's Elena Baltacha in straight sets in the second round, but she lost to four-time Grand Slam singles champion Kim Clijsters in straight sets in the third round.

The Serb paired up with her compatriot and five-time mixed doubles champion, Nenad Zimonjic in the mixed doubles event but they lost to India's experienced duo of Leander Paes and Sania Mirza in the first round.

Suarez Navarro's Olympic history

The Spaniard will be representing her country in her third Olympic Games as she was unseeded in the Beijing Olympics and she suffered a first round defeat to China's Peng Shuai.

The ninth seed returned to London four years later and she drew former Grand Slam champion and the fifth-seeded Australian, Sam Stosur, in the first round and she picked up her first win in the singles event by winning in three sets, however, she lost to Clijsters in the second round.

Their history

Ivanovic and Suarez Navarro have played each other three times on the WTA and the former world number one leads their head-to-head 2-1. The duo have played once on hard courts and twice on the Spaniard's favoured surface on clay.

Their first meeting occurred in 2012 in the first round in Doha on hard courts and the Serb was leading 6-1, 4-1 but the Spaniard withdrew from the match.

Their second meeting was two years later in the quarterfinals of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome and Ivanovic was victorious in three sets.

Suarez Navarro halved their deficit in their meetings by recording her first victory over the Serb in her hometown event of the Mutua Madrid Open on clay in the third round.

Who wins?

Ivanovic has suffered three, third round defeats at the big hard court events to Madison Keys at the Australian Open, Karolina Pliskova in Indian Wells and Timea Bacsinszky in Miami.

Suarez Navarro has performed better than the Serb on hard courts as she reached her second quarterfinal in Melbourne losing to Agnieszka Radwanska, and she won the biggest title of her career at the Qatar Total Open in Doha which is a Premier Mandatory event.

The unseeded Serb has a good forehand which works well on hard courts and her serve is a good weapon on this surface when it is firing on all cylinders.

However, Suarez Navarro may be diminutive in stature but she has a drop shot and possesses a backhand which she can utilise and use as a dangerous weapon.

Both players can engage each in long rallies and both of them will have pressure on their shoulders as they are representing their countries at the Olympics.

No ranking points are on offer but both of them will be feeling nervous to progress further in this tournament.

This is the second match scheduled on Saturday on Centre Court at the Olympic Tennis Center, and the winner of this encounter will face Croatia's Ana Konjuh or Germany's Annika Beck in the second round.

Prediction: Ivanovic in three sets
