Tommy Smith scored the only goal of the game as Ipswich Town beat Leeds United 1-0 at Elland Road on Tuesday evening.

Smith was in the right place to head home from a corner to ensure Leeds fell to their first league defeat of the season.

Leeds start the brighter

Leeds United started the brighter of the two sides after a dull first 10 minutes of the game and a low cross from defender Gaetano Berardi was scrambled clear by the Ipswich Town defence with striker Chris Wood waiting inside the area to pounce. Soon after, the Whites thought they should have had a penalty as Lewis Cook surged into the box and went down under a challenge, but the appeals were waved away.

Despite a good start from Leeds, both Marco Silvestri and Dean Gerken remained untested as the game reached the 20-minute mark.

The first effort on goal came midway through the first half from Leeds from Mirco Antenucci, as he picked up the ball on the edge of the box but saw his low strike deflected into the arms of Gerken.

Leeds were beginning to pile on the pressure and Berardi had an efford from long range after a corner was deflected into his path, but his shot fizzed over.

Ipswich open the scoring

Despite Leeds' promising attacking play it was Ipswich who opened the scoring, as a corner wasn't cleared and defender Smith headed the visitors' opener home from close range.

David McGodrick then blasted over from a tight angle after pressure from Leeds captain Sol Bamba. The hosts looked to get back into the game before half-time as both Tom Adeyemi and Antenucci had shots blocked as the first half drew to a close with the visitors in the lead.

Ipswich start brightly after the break

After Leeds' good start to the first half, Ipswich were the team that started brightly after the break as Silvestri had to hold onto a drilled cross from Town striker Daryl Murphy, before he was called upon to save a volley from Arsenal loanee Ashley Maitland-Niles.

Silvestri had to be alert once more as he pushed away a deflected Ryan Fraser effort as Ipswich looked to get the second goal which could have put the game to bed.

Leeds decided to step up a gear and threatened through midfielder Cook, marching through the Ipswich midfield before playing a one-two with Wood but firing over from just outside the box.

Ipswich were by then enjoying some of the better chances as both Fraser and Murphy went close as Leeds' frustration grew.

Cook was the danger man for Leeds and he went close twice in the last 10 minutes for Leeds, but neither effort was enough to claw back a point for the home side.

Big call from the referee

There was a big call for referee James Adcock in the final five minutes of the game as Sam Byram went through on goal and was seemingly brought down by an Ipswich defender, but the official adjudged Byram to have dived and booked the Leeds man.

Leeds did push for a late goal but nothing came and they fell to a first league defeat of the season.

Ipswich, meanwhile, bounced back from their recent drubbing at the hands of Reading to move back into the Championship top six.
