Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse was overcome with emotion after netting his first goals of the season in the 3-0 win at St Mary's against a poor West Brom side.

The youngster first netted the perfect free-kick just five minutes into the game before smashing in a penalty after Matt Targett was fouled in the box to give Saints control in this mid-table contest.

Ward-Prowse nearly cried after first goal

Speaking to the club's official website after the match, the 20-year-old was left buzzing with his two goals against the Baggies, admitting that it was a good feeling to get the monkey off his back.

“I wanted to cry", an emotional Ward-Prowse said, adding that "so much hard work" goes into his play and "so many go close in games", so to finally cap a fine performance with a goal was a "great feeling".

Goals dedicated to club legend

The England under-21 captain went on to note that it was the perfect opening to the match, but also paid his respect to a Southampton club legend who tragically passed away at the start of January.

"It was a great way to start the game," Ward-Prowse beamed. "I’d like to dedicate the goals to Roy Beazley, who unfortunately passed away a couple of weeks ago."

Positive week for everyone at the club

After seeing off Watford in midweek it was vital that the Saints backed it up with a victory this afternoon, and that’s exactly what they did as Dusan Tadic scored for the second game in succession as a substitute to help earn the club another important three points.

“It’s been a big week," the youngster went on to say. Ward-Prowse noted that the club's FA Cup exit against Crystal Palace was disappointing, but claimed that "We knew this week was going to be make or break for our season".

Momentum to take forward for Saints

Ward-Prowse felt that after picking up two fantastic results, it is now time for the club to really move forward and not look back after a difficult run beforehand.

"To pick up six points from the last two games is great," Ward-Prowse reflected, noting that it would give the side "momentum now to push on".

He concluded, claiming that it was Southampton's team spirit and hard work which had helped them get past what had been a truly torrid run of results in recent months.
