Brighton & Hove Albion will welcome Portsmouth to the AMEX Stadium in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

After the draw took place over the weekend, Graham Potter’s side will face the League One outfit week commencing September 14.

And should the Seagulls progress, they will face a trip to Championship opponents in either Derby County or Preston North End. Derby made the second round at the expense of debutants Barrow after the Rams won on penalties on Saturday.

Cup run a possibility

The news comes after Albion closed their pre-season campaign with a goalless draw against fellow Premier League side West Brom.

Potter was forced to make a few changes due to international call ups for Joel Veltman, Leandro Trossard and Tariq Lamptey but the Seagulls still looked the livelier early on. Adam Lallana’s ball in was cleared as far as Yves Bissouma but he volleyed over the top from the edge of the area.

Steven Alzate, starting at right-wing back, almost provided the opening goal when he crossed into Neal Maupay, but the French forward saw his effort deflected behind.

However, the best chance of the first half fell to the visitors a minutes before the break, after Matheus Pereira played a neat one-two with Kyle Edwards but his drive from outside the box came back off the post.

Another clean sheet valuable for the Seagulls

And Slaven Bilic’s side had another chance early in the second half when the Baggies were gifted possession in the final third but Charlie Austin fired just over the top.

Overall, chances were at a premium for both teams but Albion went closest to getting the breakthrough when Maupay put through Lallana but the former Liverpool midfielder dragged the ball into the side netting when he only had the keeper to beat.

Brighton kick off their new Premier League campaign on Monday 14 September when they welcome new-look Chelsea to the AMEX Stadium.
