Alexandre Lacazette opened up the scoring for the evening, but Liverpool's Sadio Mane quickly responded with a tap-in.

Andy Robertson doubled the reigning champions' lead, with their new boy Diogo Jota putting away their third.

Arsenal fought well, but there is still room for improvement...

A few shaky moments from The Gunners backline meant Liverpool could get in behind a few times, but some resilient and determined defending proves the new found mentality and structure Mikel Arteta has implemented into the team.

It was never going to be easy away at Anfield for Arsenal, as Liverpool were unbeaten in 60 games at their ground, but The Gunners gave it a good go. In recent years, under different management, the result could have been by a much bigger margin.

  • 1) Arteta needs to be backed by the board

Mikel Arteta continues to apply tactics that work, he set up against Liverpool to sit back, soak up the pressure, defend well and get Liverpool on the counterattack.

Arteta's plan of defending bravely and soaking up the pressure to catch Liverpool on the break worked when Lacazette scored. But some shaky defending from Arsenal's midfield in Mohammed Elneny and Granit Xhaxa almost meant they looked invisible.

  • 2) Aubameyang needs world-class support

In a game which took the Arsenal captain 92 minutes to get his first clear-cut chance, he looked isolated at times, as Liverpool full back Trent Alexander-Arnold seemed to keep him quiet.

It was always going to be a frustrating night for Arsenal's number 14, with Liverpool dominating possession. They did not allow the Gabon international much room to breath, with partner Lacazette not helping his case by not putting away two huge chances to tighten the scoreline at 2-1.

As rumours strengthen  of Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar, could he be the link from midfield to attack that the Arsenal captain needs?

  • 3) Keep the faith in Mikel Arteta

Arsenal showed some really good signs, the tactics worked to an extent, goalkeeper Bernd Leno made some brilliant point-blank saves, the defence is getting more confident playing out from the back and substitute Dani Ceballos proved his positivity on the ball.

Gabriel and William Saliba are still yet to make their mark where soon it will be time to look forward to their young partnership at the back.

With a few world class additions, the Arsenal will be back.
