Petra Kvitova and Garbine Muguruza won their respective matches against Lucie Safarova and Angelique Kerber on the fourth day in Singapore.

Czech mate

Petra Kvitova kept her chances of qualifying alive  after a 7-5 7-5 win over fellow Czech compatriot Lucie Safarova. After losing her first match against Angelique Kerber, Kvitova knew that a win would be vital if she is to move into the knockout stages.

The match itself started off with 11 service holds as both players put on a serving masterclass for the crowd. However the pivotal break occurred at 6-5 as Kvitova broke Safarova on her second break point to take the set.  The second set was only similar to the first in way of scoreline as whilst it finished 7-5 to Kvitova , both players were struggling to hold serve as the set saw five breaks of serve.

Kvitova tweeted after the match that she was looking forward to when they will be on the same team, alluding to their Fed Cup final on the weekend of 14-15 November later this year.

Muguruza gets another win

In the other match of the day Garbine Muguruza won in straight sets against Angelique Kerber in a close match. Both Muguruza and Kerber went into the match knowing a win would see them qualify after wins against Safarova and Kvitova respectively. However it was to be the world number three Muguruza who would get the decisive win playing consistent tennis throughout the match.

The first set was closely fought with the Spaniard emerging the victor of the first set 6-4. Taking an early break, Muguruza went ahead 2-0 before Kerber got the break straight back to level the set. With Kerber serving to level the set at 5-5 however, Muguruza grasped the initiative breaking Kerber before serving out the set 6-4. The second start was much like the first with Muguruza never behind. With both players breaking once, Kerber was serving to edge ahead 5-4 however Muguruza broke giving her the opportunity to serve for the match which she did to win her second match in Singapore.

The next fixtures for the White Group on Friday see Kerber face off against Safarova whilst Kvitova is to play Muguruza.
