The Aegon Classic is set to have one of its best tournaments in history, with 14 of the current top 30 set to be in action in Birmingham this summer.

A total of 24 players have been confirmed for the main draw, with defending champion Angelique Kerber, Madrid champion Simona Halep, Lucie Safarova and Madison Keys all previously being confirmed for the tournament.

Top 30 stars in action

Behind Kerber and Halep, Belinda Bencic is the third highest-ranked player set to be in action. The world number 10 won the title at the Aegon International last year, and could well be a danger on the grass again this year. Following Bencic, Carla Suarez Navarro and two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova are also set to be in action.

Last year's runner-up Karolina Pliskova will be looking to go one step further in Birmingham this year, while British interest in the tournament has grown with the entrance of Johanna Konta. Meanwhile, former world number one Caroline Wozniacki will be looking to pick up form after an injury-stricken 2016.

Other top 30 players in action in Birmingham this June will be former Eastbourne champion Ekaterina Makarova and German star Andrea Petkovic. Furthermore, Elina Svitolina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will also be in action.

Other key names set to play

The strength of the field continues outside of the top 30, with some other good players set to be in Birmingham this summer.

The resurgent Dominika Cibulkova will return to the top 30 next week and could be a contender for the title in Birmingham, while former finalist Barbora Strycova and rising star Daria Gavrilova have also played well so far in 2016 and will be difficult for anyone to beat.

Alongside Gavrilova, rising stars Timea Babos and Jelena Ostapenko will also be in action, as well as Coco Vandeweghe, Lesia Tsurenko and Irina-Camelia Begu.

The last player in the field is Misaki Doi, while Peng Shuai has used her protected ranking to gain entry into the tournament.
