After a great performance in her last match, Sabine Lisicki was not able to get through her third round match as Yaroslava Shvedova defeated the former Wimbledon finalist in straight sets in just 76 minutes. It was a very disappointing performance by Lisicki who committed many unforced errors and gifted many points to her opponent, but an amazing display of tennis by Shvedova who in the second set took every opportunity.

Shvedova can't consolidate and Lisicki forces a tiebreak

Shvedova started the match by making a lot of mistakes, which helped the German to hold easily. However, in an imitation of the first game, it was now Svedova who took advantage of the mistakes of her opponent to hold and level things up at 1-1. Lisicki opened the next game with a double-fault that was followed by more unforced errors that gave the Kazakh the first break point but Lisicki quickly saved it with an ace, however, the German then hit a double-fault but fortunately for her Shvedova then did two unforced errors to gift the game to Lisicki.

Without complications, the Kazakh tied the scoreboard to 2-2. A very erratic game by the former Wimbledon finalist handed the first break of the match to Svedova who in the following game was unable to consolidate.

After that exchange of breaks, Lisicki held her serve but then the match was interrupted by the rain. When the players came back on court Shvedova made sure to equal the scoreboard at 4-4. The Kazakh broke again in a game where the German had some problems with her serve.

Once again, Svedova had a chance to consolidate and take a lead in this first set, but she started the game with a double fault that would be the first of three in that game. The German won the break back after hitting a forehand unforced error. There was another exchange of holds to force this first set to a tiebreak.

Svedova started with a mini break after she hit a forehand winner, but the German broke back to level things up at 1-1. However, Lisicki then hit a backhand unforced error followed by two awful double faults in a row to give Svedova a lead of 4-1. Two more unforced errors by the German gifted a set point for the Kazakh who eventually took the first set after another mistake by her opponent.

Lisicki's mistakes help Shvedova to win

Following her momentum after winning the first set, Shvedova started the second set with a hold to love. But for Lisicki things were not going that well as once again she was the first to hand the break even after she saved one break point.

This time, Shvedova wasn’t going to make the same mistakes she did in the first set and consolidated the break right away for a 3-0 lead. The unforced errors continued for the former Wimbledon finalist who after losing that tiebreak was not able to find the rhythm in the match. The Kazakh got a second break after the German hit two unforced errors and another double fault.

Everything was working for Shvedova who was determined to end this match quickly, once again, she consolidated the second break with a hold to love to lead 5-0. A tough game for Lisicki who was not finding her game, she saved one break point and finally after hitting a backhand winner she got on the scoreboard in the second set, but she was still two breaks down.

Shvedova kept her nerve when she held for the match and she did in a great way when she held to love thanks to three unforced errors by Lisicki. Yaroslava Shvedova booked her spot in the fourth round after 76 minutes on the court.

Next for Shvedova

In the next round, Shvedova will have to face the former Wimbledon semifinalist, Lucie Safarova who won an exhausting match against Jana Cepelova. This will the fourth time these players will meet, however, it’s Shvedova who leads the series 3-0. Their last encounter was this year at Indian Wells where the Kazakh won in straight sets. All of their meetings have been on hard courts.
