Canadian Milos Raonic had not dropped a single set at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships coming into play today. However, David Goffin was determined to see that come to an end. He did so by bursting out of the gates with a 2 set lead on the back of his aggressive play on the green grass.

However, the Canadian number one proved once again why he is such a threat to win his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. He used his powerful serve to hammer the grass and hammer away at Goffin's lead. When all was said and done, Raonic had completed a huge comeback to advance to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon with a 4-6, 3-6, 6-4. 6-4, 6-4 victory.

A shocking start

Raonic had basically aced his way to the fourth round Wimbledon. His imposing 6'5 figure gives him such leverage that his serves have been nearly unreturnable. However, the world  number 11, Goffin, didn't achieve his lofty ranking by shying away from tough opponents.

After holding steady throughout the first several games, the Belgian was able to break Raonic when the tall Canadian misplayed a backhand volley. This came after Goffin used his blazing speed and niftiness to smash a beautiful winner across the net with his forehand, which seemed to be in peak condition to begin the match. In fact, Goffin blasted 14 winners in that first set in an impressive start.

As impressive as the first set was for the Belgian, he backed up his play in the second. He did, however, get a little help from his Canadian counterpart. In the fifth game of that second set, Raonic posted three errors- one unforced.  The last error handed Goffin a break that he never relinquished in the set.

Raonic storms back

For all his troubles in this match, Raonic was always holding a key skill in his back pocket. His serve is one of the best in tennis and he would display it in remarkable fashion to get himself back in the match. The big right-hander blasted ten unreturnable serves over the third and fourth set. Each allowed him to comfortable hold while putting untold pressure on Goffin to hold steady on his own serve.

He couldn't stand tall to Raonic's momentum. The Belgian found himself down a break early in the third set, and did little to get the break back. When the dust was settled, the match stood 2-2, and the battle of wills would need to be decided in a fifth and decisive set.

Midway through that final set, Raonic used a magical backhand shot to give himself a break point. The crowd exploded as he shot across the cross to flip a winner just past Goffin. After the Belgian saved two breaks, Raonic used his powerful frame to send a blistering groundstroke across the net. Goffin's own return sailed wide. It gave the Canadian the final break he needed to complete his comeback. He easily consolidated throughout the remainder of the set. On match point, Raonic threw his hands up in celebration, marveling at a feat he had never accomplished before. His swinging forehand that rippled the line brought him fully back from the brink of defeat.

Until today, Raonic had never come back to win a match after being down by 2 sets. Goffin, for his part, had not lost a five-setter in his last five chances. Something had to give today. The endurance of Milos Raonic made sure it wasn't him. Now, brimming with confidence after defeating another top 15 player, the big Canadian takes his deadly serve to the quarterfinals, in search of his first Grand Slam title.
