Jared Donaldson fell behind early against 12th seed David Goffintrailing by a set and a break, but fought back to secure a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-0 win for the biggest victory of his young career to date at the U.S. Open. Donaldson will face Viktor Troicki in the second round.

Goffin secures early break to take the first set

The match opened with three love games to start, the last a break to the Belgian to take a 2-1 lead. As the set progressed, neither man was doing much on the other's serve as no game went to deuce.

Finally, in the 10th game, Donaldson pushed Goffin on his serve as the Indian Wells semifinalist attempted to serve out the set, the American had his first break chance of the match, saved by Goffin. That would eventually lead to him taking the first set.

Donaldson rallies from a break down to win the second set, level the match at one set all

The pressure was immediately back on the 19-year-old as he was broken to start the second set with Goffin appearing to be in control. The key sequence was in Donaldson's next two service games as he fought off four break points combined. He missed a chance to break back in the fourth game, but eventually got his first break of the match in the eighth game to level the set at 4-4. He then stunned the Belgian with another break, this one in the 12th game to take the second set and square the match at one set all.

Donaldson continues to stay in front, takes the third set after breaking late

With the crowd firmly on his side, Donaldson was utilizing his power and control to full effect as he built his momentum, breaking Goffin for a 3-1 lead. The Belgian sensed a response was needed, but was unable to find one until late in the set when the American attempted to serve out the set leading 5-3, breaking to stay alive in the frame. Perhaps the key game of the entire match came next as Donaldson broke on his third set point to win it and take a two sets to one lead.
