Rafael Nadal wins the first set 6-4!

And as expected, Nadal manages to serve it out, ending the set with his fourth ace. The 23-shot rally that Nadal won was key in winning this game.

Nadal's serving has been impeccable, getting 76% of first serves in and losing only two points after the first serve. The winner/unforced error ratio is 13 to 4 for Nadal and I fail to see a weakness in his game so far tonight.

Nadal* 5-4 Tsitsipas

FIRST BREAK!!! At last, we see a break in this match, Tsitsipas succumbed to Nadal's returning prowess and the Spaniard will now serve for the first set.

Nadal* 3-4 Tsitsipas

And we see the server under pressure for the first time, Tsitsipas going down 15-30 and then giving Nadal two break points. Nadal wasted the first one with an unforced error and Tsitsipas saved the second, going on to win the first deuce game of the match.

Nadal 2-2 *Tsitsipas

Another solid hold from Nadal. First four games, we've only seen two points won by the returner. Don't be fooled by the scoreline though, we are seeing brilliant serving performances but also entertaining rallies.

Nadal* 1-2 Tsitsipas

And now Tsitsipas holds to love, the game finishing after a surprising overhead error from Nadal. We're only seven minutes in, and three games have been played already.

Nadal 1-1 *Tsitsipas

Nadal responded with a hold to love over the Greek. In their last match, Tsitsipas did not manage to earn a single breakpoint in three sets against Nadal, so we will see if Nadal manages to repeat that performance.

Venue

The O2 Arena in London is hosting the ATP Finals for the final time this year, unfortunately with no fans attending due to COVID-19, though the arena usually holds 20,000. The O2 has been an ATP Finals stalwart, hosting the event since 2009. The event will move to Turin next year, where it will stay for the next five years.

Tsitsipas' ranking impact

Tsitsipas was the champion in 2019 with one round-robin loss, meaning that he has no points left to gain this year. However, I'm sure the prize money and the opportunity to defend his title are motivation enough.

Nadal's ranking impact

If Nadal went on to win every match from here, he would gain 900 ranking points, closing the gap to Novak Djokovic at No. 1 to 1280 points.

Head to head

Rafael Nadal leads the head-to-head in a dominant fashion, 5-1. Their first meeting was in the 2018 Barcelona final, where Tsitsipas managed to win only three games. The Greek's only win came in a 2019 Madrid semifinal, but he also pushed Nadal in their last meeting at the ATP Finals last year, losing 7-5 in the third set.

Group permutations

As I already mentioned, Thiem is through, Rublev is out, therefore Tsitsipas and Nadal are directly playing for the semifinal spot.

Group London 2020

The two other players that will face each other earlier today are Dominic Thiem, who has already qualified, and Andrey Rublev, already eliminated. Thiem will try to win the match to guarantee he will advance from the first place, Rublev will be playing for honour and approximately $150,000 in prize money that he would get from the win.

Tsitsipas' current form

Tsitsipas' first match in the Finals was a three-set loss to Thiem but followed it up with an incredibly close win over Rublev, saving a matchpoint to win the third-set tiebreak.

Nadal's current form

Nadal opened the tournament with a straightforward win over Andrey Rublev but then lost to Dominic Thiem in one of the most entertaining matches to grace the O2 Arena.
