Richard Wood is the latest addition to Graham Alexander’s Fleetwood Town squad, as he agreed a one month emergency loan deal to join the club. The Rotherham United player will be able to join up with the first team straight away as soon as he arrives at the club, and will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s game against Port Vale at Highbury.

The 30-year-old defender started his career back in 2003 and has been at a few clubs since then. His career began at Sheffield Wednesday and, in the seven seasons he was at the club, Wood managed to play a total of 174 games.

Wood spent seven years at Sheffield Wednesday

After leaving Sheffield, he made his way to Coventry in 2010. He would go on to make 112 appearances for the West Midlands club and scored seven goals. In 2013, he moved once again, this time going to Charlton Athletic where he only spent a single season and featured 21 times.

Last season, Wood joined Steve Evans’ Championship side but has failed to make an impression thus far. His main accomplishment at the club, so far, is that he was part of the Millers’ squad who beat Fleetwood Town in the Capital One Cup last season.

The Fleetwood manager, Graham Alexander, said: “We’ve spoke about not bringing loans through the door this season because we want to promote from within." He believes that Wood will add "an ingredient in the team" that they haven't already got.

“He’s a player I’ve admired for a long, long time and originally spoke to him two years ago about bringing him in as a permanent player," added Alexander. The Fleetwood boss admitted “he had options in the Championship" but was someone they had "always kept an eye on".

Alexander also believes that he can "add to the quality we have in our squad", before concluding: “We know we’ve got a top pro on our hands so he’ll go straight into the squad for Saturday’s game, and I’m sure he’ll give us the effect we’re looking for.”
