Cardiff City returned to the Sky Bet Championship with a 2-0 victory over Leeds United at the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Junior Hoilett and Robert Glatzel in either half helped Neil Harris' men to a winning return in unfamiliar circumstances.

No crowds are allowed into  grounds following restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cardiff have the games first chance

Following a piece of brilliance by Hoilett, cutting inside from the left, he beat three men before firing wide of the post.

Leeds thought they should have had a penalty when Helder Costa went down under the challenge of Curtis Nelson but the referee Andy Woolmer disagreed.

Following a corner, Stuart Dallas delivered a dangerous cross which found Ben White whose header went over.

Leeds begin to get on top

Jack Harrison's decent looking cross towards Tyler Roberts was cleared by Nelson, it fell kindly for Mateusz Klich who can't get a clean strike on target.

Marcelo Bielsa's side came the closest to breaking the deadlock, Kalvin Phillips' corner was met by the head of Luke Ayling who saw his effort cleared off the line by Will Vaulks.

Cardiff take the lead against the run of play

Phillips tried to play a blind pass but gave the ball away to Hoilett, who drove forward before firing into the top corner beyond Illan Meslier, who arguably should have done better.

Leeds could have equalised before the break when Ayling and Roberts did well down the right, Roberts' cross found Harrison whose effort looked to be heading in only for team-mate Patrick Bamford blocked on the line.

Leeds have first chance of the second period

Bamford rose the highest to head the ball down and across goal for Roberts who looked as if he was going to score only for Alex Smithies to make a superb block.

Cardiff's first effort of the second period came when Joe Ralls fired wide after a neat one-two with Glatzel.

Cardiff extend their lead

Cardiff extended their lead when Nathaniel Mendez-Laing won the ball back and squared it to Glatzel, who controlled it before firing beyond Meslier from the edge of the area.

Leeds almost got one back on 87 minutes, Phillips played a lovely ball over the top for Bamford who couldn't steer the ball on target.

Ian Poveda did well on the right as he tried to dink a cross into the area which was deflected and beat Smithies, only for Sean Morrison to clear the ball off the line.

Takeaways from the match

Mistakes and finishing problems

Two errors from Leeds in each half gifted the home side the win. Neil Harris' side hadn't really troubled the Whites defence before they were handed their first goal, when Phillips played a blind pass straight to Hoilett who made the Whites pay.

In the second half an error from Leeds captain Cooper gifted the ball to Mendez-Laing who teed up Glatzel who fired beyond Meslier off the posts.

The lack of goal scoring could hurt Leeds, they had plenty of possession but failed to create any clear cut chances however, without the mistakes it would have probably finished 0-0, which would have been a fair result on reflection.

Poveda makes Leeds debut

Poveda had to wait until June for his Leeds debut and looked good in the little time he was on the field of play.

The winger, who joined the Whites from Manchester City, seemed to cause a few problems and had two defenders doubling up on him down the Leeds right as he looked very lively and looked to hurt the Cardiff defence whenever he had the chance to run towards them.

A big chance for Poveda came as the game was heading towards it's conclusion, the winger Poveda tried to dink a towards goal which caused Morrison to clear away.
