The trio of James Beattie, Darryl Flahavan and Andrew Hughes have joined Garry Monk's technical team at Sheffield Wednesday

Beattie can help improve the attack

Beattie, well known to Wednesdayites as a player for his two spells up top for City rivals Sheffield United, joins the blue side of Sheffield as assistant manager.

A goalscoring forward during his playing days for the likes of Southampton, Stoke City, Everton and The Blades, Beattie has a proven record of getting the best from the strikers he has coached.

At Leeds UnitedChris Wood more than doubled his goal tally from 13 in the 2015/16 campaign to 30 the following year. The 42-year-old also had a profound impact on youngster Che Adams at Birmingham City, his goal tally also doubled and more to 22 in the 2018/19 season from just nine the season prior.

The Owls currently have  Jordan Rhodes as their only striking option left at the club after Steven Fletcher, Sam Winnall and Fernando Forestieri departed at the end of June. Meanwhile, Atdhe Nuhiu is not expected to return to the club this week for fitness tests before a condensed pre-season schedule.

Last season's loanee Josh Windass could possibly return to S6 if a deal can be made with parent club Wigan Athletic, but Monk will certainly be aiming to bolster attacking options for his new assistant manager to work with.

Flahavan looking to use his experience to help young ‘keepers

41-year-old Flahavan, like Beattie, left his role at Birmingham City just yesterday, he joins as goalkeeper coach to replace Nicky Weaver who has occupied the role for the last two years since the departure of Andy Rhodes.

He will be looking forward to working with young 'keepers Cameron Dawson and Joe Wildsmith neither of whom were able to nail down the number one spot last season.

While Kieren Westwood has one year left remaining on his contract the likelihood is he has played his last game for the club as Monk wants to place his faith in youth.

Finally, Hughes joins as first team coach having left his role as manager of Sheffield United under 23's in June. He has also had spells as first team coach at Huddersfield Town and Crystal Palace after a 19-year playing career for the likes of Reading, Leeds United and Norwich City.

Monk also remains in the hunt for a central defender, Chey Dunkley and Frederico Venancio are just two of the names being considered. Dunkley is a free agent after leaving Wigan Athletic last month while Venancio had a successful loan spell during the 2017/18 season and would be open to a return to Hillsborough.
