Goals from Joe Allen, Sheyi Ojo and Joao Teixeira put the Merseysiders through in the FA Cup as the manager went for another young team.

Joe Allen's early strike, followed by goals from Sheyi Ojo and Joao Teixeira, ensured Liverpool were comfortably through to the next round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 win over Exeter City.

After the two couldn't be separated at St James' Park, a replay at Anfield was required to determine which of these sides would go through to the fourth round of the FA Cup to face West Ham United.

Jürgen Klopp chose an inexperienced and youthful side in the first tie, and opted to go with a similar approach again on Wednesday evening.

Simon Mignolet, Jose Enrique, Allen and Christian Benteke were the only senior and experienced players to start in the team as Klopp made 10 changes to the side that narrowly lost 1-0 to Manchester United at the weekend.

A huge boost ahead of the game was that local boy, and fan favourite Jon Flanagan made his return to the Liverpool squad on the bench too, entering the fray during what was a relatively easy win in the end.

Dominant start rewarded with a goal

In the opening stages of the game, Liverpool weren't creating many chances, but were dominating possession and controlling the ball well.

One of the Reds' main problems this season is converting the many shots they have had, but were clinical in the early stages of the game.

Allen has been linked with a move back to Swansea City recently as he enters the final 18 months of his contract, but after some recent good performances, and his last minute goal against Arsenal in the 3-3 draw, he may end up fighting his way to a new contract after opening the scoring in this game too.

Just 10 minutes into the match, promising left back Brad Smith made an excellent run down the left hand side and advanced into the box, after playing a brilliant one-two with Benteke, where he then played a low cross for Allen to simply tap in for his second goal in as many appearances.

Wasteful chances kept Exeter in the game

Just less than 20 minutes into the game Liverpool had a huge chance to double their lead through Benteke too.

Again from the left hand side, Teixeira played a lovely cross into the box and the Belgian had a free header to try and silence some critics, but, from just a few yards out, he headed over and missed a glorious chance to make it 2-0.

Another chance for the £32 million man to get a goal came from a corner, but his header at the back post could only find the side netting.

Teenager Cameron Brannagan was eager to get on the scoresheet as well as he had a good chance to get his first Liverpool goal.

The youngster hit a well struck shot from the edge of the box which forced the busy Exeter goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik into a good low save, again meaning the scoreline remained just 1-0.

Jordon Ibe was next to test City's 'keeper when his direct run ended with him striking the ball low and hard towards the bottom right corner, but again Olejnik was there to keep his side in the game.

Klopp's men managed to score with just their second shot of the game, but by half-time the Reds had registered an additional 11 shots without managing to double their lead.

It was a frustrating half for Paul Tisdale's men, on the other hand, as they couldn't manage a single shot. Despite this, they still had a chance of changing the game going into the second half.

Changes for Exeter as Reds continue to create

After their struggles, Tisdale opted to change formation in the second half and made a double change at half-time in an attempt to allow his team to attack, rather than defend.

The Exeter manager opted for two strikers this time and brought on both Will Hoskins and Tom Nichols to try and find a way through the Liverpool defence.

The changes at half-time made an instant impact too as, just 35 seconds into the second half, Nichols manage to register Exeter's first shot of the game, however it ended up going high over the bar.

It was a Liverpool substitute that really roused the crowd though as, just five minutes into the second half, Anfield rose and gave a standing ovation for returning full-back Flanagan.

The 23-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, returned onto the pitch for the first time in 619 days to a fantastic reception, replacing Connor Randall at right-back.

Flanagan's return was almost followed by the second goal of the game too. A short corner to Ibe led to him cutting into the box from the right hand side and he unleashed a thunderous left foot shot, which rocked the underside of the bar and then bounced off the line.

The ball was a matter of inches away from crossing the line, with Ibe so close from getting his first Anfield goal.

Chances continued to flow for Liverpool from here too, Ibe having another after a well worked one-two with Teixeira ended with the young Englishman having his left footed shot go just wide of the post.

Ojo and Teixeira wrap things up in front of the Kop

With Klopp's men failing to get a second goal, the Exeter fans were optimistic and continued to show their faith and support by urging their team on whenever they had the ball.

However, 75 minutes into the game, Liverpool finally got their second goal - with their 22nd shot. Substitute Ojo received the ball from Ibe just inside the box on the left hand side, and effortlessly place his shot into the top left hand corner of the goal with his preferred left foot.

After Ojo's first goal for the club, executed beautifully right in front of the Kop, Teixeira scored the third and final goal of the game to round things off.

Benteke, who missed quite a few chances in the game, showed his worth by dancing past three Exeter players before playing an inch perfect pass into the box for the Portuguese playmaker, who coolly finished to make it 3-0.

Benteke almost got the goal he wanted all game too but, with the last chance of the game, a four on two counter attacked ended with the Belgian rounding the keeper and taking the ball out for a goal kick.

Klopp's faith in his youngsters paid off in the end though in a fairly comfortable game and Liverpool will now face West Ham in 10 days time, in the next round of the cup.

Liverpool will need a lot more experienced players in that game however, having lost twice to the Hammers already this season.
