The contract of 25-year-old right-handed pitcher Chris Peacock was purchased by the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization from the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball on Friday. He became the fourth Wingnuts' player to have his contract purchased by a Major League Baseball organization this year -- joining right-handed pitchers Jon Link (Miami Marlins) and Matt Nevarez (Pirates) as well as designated hitter J.T. Wise (Texas Rangers).
Peacock will be getting his first crack at affiliated ball as he has spent all three of his professional seasons pitching in various independent baseball leagues. He has posted a 15-8 record while sporting a 5.58 ERA in 69 appearances (19 starts) in his three professional seasons. He has also struck out 135 batters while surrendering 81 walks in 169 1/3 innings pitched in his brief career so far.
This past season, Peacock posted a 3.02 ERA in 41 2/3 innings (36 games) pitched between United League Baseball and the American Association. He also struck out 47 batters while surrendering 22 walks en route to a 7-2 record in his 2014 campaign.
