Marin Cilic represented Croatia at the Olympics for the third time in his career, and the former world number nine was disappointed with his showing in Rio.

The tall Croat is usually a threat on hard courts, and the 2014 US Open champion was pleased with his performances overall but as a former Grand Slam champion, he expected himself to produce better results.

Unfortunately for Cilic, France's Gael Monfils reached the semifinals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto and picked up the biggest title of his career in Washington, therefore he was in a rich vein of form heading into Rio.

Nonetheless, Cilic wasn't too hard on himself but as a professional, he expected better, "Not winning a medal at the Olympics is a bad result. At least I've played well in Rio and I have nothing to blame myself about."

Should they not meet each other at the fourth and final Masters 1,000 event on North American hard courts at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati or at the US Open, the duo will play against each other during the semifinal Davis Cup tie between France and Croatia in September.

The Croat also mentioned that their match would be different, and drew comparisons between his team and France's Davis Cup team and said that the French Davis Cup team have the better players due to their names.

"That match will be different. We are playing at home on a different surface, I hope to be in optimal form by then. The Frenchman's are better than us by the names, but it's the Davis Cup, everything is possible."

Cilic is currently competing in Cincinnati, and he recorded a straight sets victory over Serbia's Viktor Troicki in the first round, and he is looking forward to returning to Flushing Meadows.

2015 was an average year for Cilic and he was struggling with injury throughout some parts of the season, however, his title defence in New York was a respectable one as he reached the semifinals losing to eventual champion and world number one Novak Djokovic.
