The 2016 Swiss Indoors, the last ATP 500 event of the year, which is held in Basel, has secured an impressive entry list, with four top ten players set to be in action amongst other notable names.
In the absence of seven-time champion and Swiss legend Roger Federer, the Swiss crowd will have another home star, Stan Wawrinka, to cheer on, as well as 14-time Grand Slam final (and last year’s runner-up) Rafael Nadal who is also entered.
Four top-ten stars in action
The tournament has always been able to secure a strong field, and that hasn’t changed this year, with four top ten stars in action.
Wawrinka, who will be on a high after winning his first US Open title, will be looking for a strong build-up for the ATP World Tour Finals, as well as performing well in front of his home crowd; he’ll be looking to do better than last year, where he fell to Ivo Karlovic in the opening round.
Also set to be in action is Nadal, who lost to Federer in the final last year. The Spaniard will be looking to go one step further this year, as well as secure his spot at the World Tour Finals; he currently sits in the final qualifying spot.
Furthermore, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori will both be in action in Basel. Both have been in solid form this year, and will be using the Indoor Hard tournament as they build up to London; they’re both currently set to qualify.
Several other stars in action
There is incredible depth in the field for the tournament, which takes place in October, with several big names returning.
2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, who reached the quarterfinals last year, will once again be in action, as will losing semifinalists Richard Gasquet and Jack Sock. Furthermore, David Goffin, a quarterfinalist last year and runner-up in 2014, will also be in action.
Also returning is Grigor Dimitrov, who will be hoping to do better than his second round performance last year, whilst the ever-controversial Nick Kyrgios will be making his tournament debut.
Other players appearing
Several other notable names are also appearing in the tournament later this year.
As well as Nadal, Fernando Verdasco, Pablo Carreno Busta, and Marcel Granollers will all be appearing, whilst Argentines Federico Delbonis, Juan Monaco, and Guido Pella will be looking to perform well to stake a place in their country's Davis Cup final team.
Frenchmen Benoit Paire and Nicolas Mahut will be in action, as well veterans Paolo Lorenzi, Gilles Muller, and Marcos Baghdatis. Young star Borna Coric will also be in action, with Andrey Kuznetsov and Ilya Marchenko completing the automatic entry list.
