Mikel Arteta missed a penalty with the last kick of the game as Arsenal threw away a two-goal lead and were forced to come from behind to earn a point against neighbours Fulham.

Arsenal stormed into a two-goal lead through Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski, just like they did in mid-week against Schalke in the Champions League. But just like their midweek game in Germany, the Gunners failed to hold on and Fulham leveled through Dimitar Berbatov and substitute Alexander Kacaniklic before half-time.

After the break Fulham completed their comeback and took the lead for the first time when Dimitar Berbatov cooly converted from the spot after Bryan Ruiz was hauled down by Mikel Arteta.

Fulham's lead lasted all but a couple of minutes however, as Olivier Giroud doubled his tally for the afternoon with a close range header.

In the final minute of added time Phil Dowd awarded Arsenal a controversial penalty for a handball against Sascha Riether, but Mark Schwarzer saved the resulting penalty from Mikel Arteta to make sure the spoils were shared.

Arsenal's questionable form continues as they go into next weekend's North London derby currently sitting in seventh with 16 points. Fulham lie a place below on the same amount of points.

The afternoon began brightly for the Gunners when Olivier Giroud ghosted past his man in the box to head home from a Theo Walcott corner. The lead was doubled around 10 minutes later when Mikel Arteta's low cross was stabbed home by an onrushing Lukas Poldolski.

Arsenal though lost a two goal lead in Europe on Tuesday and fans became anxious when Berbatov was able to head home unmarked from a corner to claw Fulham back into the game. It was the Bulgarian who was influential in Fulham's equaliser too, as he ran the channel to chip the ball back for Alexander Kacaniklic to score with a downward header from 15 yards.

The start of the second half started without any real conviction from either side and it took a mistake for the breakthrough to come. Mikel Arteta was dispossessed by Bryan Ruiz around his own area and tugged back on the Fulham man to concede a penalty. Dimitar Berbatov converted from the spot in his own nonchalant manner, making Vito Mannone redundant in the Arsenal goal.

Arsenal responded immediately to falling behind. Santi Cazorla, who had worked tirelessly throughout the game, found Olivier Giroud in space inside the box but the striker could only rattle the foot of the post. From the resulting reboud Walcott chipped the ball back into the area for Giroud to be on hand to head-in the equaliser with 20 minutes to go.

Arsenal really turned up the pressure on Fulham, who still remained dangerous on the counter through the influential Bryan Ruiz. Olivier Giroud continued to show his growing confidence and tested Mark Schwarzer powerfully from range before going close with a header from 15 yards out.

As the game headed towards a draw, Bryan Ruiz gifted the ball to Andrey Arshavin who saw his cross hit Sascha Riether's hand inside the box. The ball had barely travelled through the air before it made contact unintentionally with the Fulham defender's arm, making it a controversial decision from referee Phil Dowd. Mikel Arteta's miserbale evening continued as he saw his penalty saved down low by Schwarzer in the Fulham goal with what proved to be the last kick of the game.

A point for both sides was ultimately a fair result in the end, although Arsenal fans will feel aggrieved that the three points weren't sealed from the spot.
