Former Manchester United and England centre half Rio Ferdinand has branded English players such as Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling overpriced, as the transfer chase for the in-demand pair hots up.

Ferdinand feels that foreign players such as Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero represent better value in comparison to the two young lions, when comparing prices during a twitter rant.

Ferdinand tweeted: "English players are soooo overpriced right now it's a joke! Kane & sterling have huge potential but 40m & 50m...aguero 38m & sanchez 32m!!!" on Saturday morning.

The 36-year-old recently retired from professional football and was the world’s most expensive defender when he moved to Old Trafford from Leeds for £29 million back in 2002.

But recently, United have been linked with a £50 million move for 21-year-old Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane whilst Manchester City have had two bids for Liverpool’s Sterling turned down, the second believed to be in the region of £40 million.

Sterling and Kane could smash British transfer record

Andy Carroll is currently the most expensive British player after Liverpool paid Newcastle United £35 million for the forward in 2011, but he played just 46 Premier League games for the Reds, scoring only six goals.

With Kane and Sterling valued at £40 million and £50 million respectively, that record could soon be broken if either of the Manchester clubs follow up interest in the pair.

Louis Van Gaal is thought to have a solid interest in Harry Kane who has scored 36 goals in 77 appearances for Spurs, whilst Sterling is one of the most sought after young talents in English football with 124 appearances for Liverpool to his name.

Kane admits he is flattered by the interest from United but insists that he is happy at White Hart Lane and will remain a Tottenham player.

Sterling, however, has made it clear he would like to leave Anfield preferably for a Champions League club. City are in pole position for his signature having had two bids turned down but Arsenal, United and Chelsea are all keeping tabs on the Liverpool starlet.
