Kristoffer Nordfeldt signs new Swansea City contract

Swansea City goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt has signed a new contract at the Liberty Stadium until 2020.

The stopper only made his transfer to Swansea from Heerenveen last summer, and has only featured four times for the club but is happy to put pen to paper on a new deal.

The Swansea website also stated that the Swede could also leave the club on loan this season.

What does this mean for the goalkeeping situation?

Nordfeldt is expected to start against Peterborough tonight, as manager Francesco Guidolin said in his press conference that he wants to see what his fringe players can do on the field.

If he does move out on loan, it’s likely that summer signing Mark Birighitti will take over his previous role as Lukasz Fabianski’s backup.

Birighitti was signed on a free transfer from Newcastle Jets, while the club also have Gerhard Tremmel and youth goalkeeper Gregor Zabret ready to step in if they need to.

“I am happy to have signed,” Nordfeldt said. “To be fair I didn’t play that much last year and for the club to give me this deal shows a big commitment.”

Nordfeldt also said that he has discussed a possible loan deal with the club, and admits that if the right club come in for him then he could leave.

“They [Swansea] are not only looking short term but long term as well, and they understand I need to keep developing if, sooner or later, I am going to be ready to be No. 1 at Swansea.”

Can Nordfeldt make it as the first choice goalkeeper at Swansea?

Fabianski probably is the best goalkeeper Swansea have seen, and could go down as Swansea’s most decorated goalkeeper alongside Roger Freestone, so it’s going to be tough to displace him.

Nordfeldt has impressed in his limited gametime in a Swansea jersey, and will look to put his name forward with another game in the EFL Cup tonight.

There’s always a chance that Fabianski moves on to a bigger club, which would mean Nordfeldt goes onto being the first choice ‘keeper.
