Tottenham Hotspur host Newcastle United on Sunday, aiming to follow on from their impressive 5-2 win against Southampton last weekend.

Spurs’ first home match however was a disappointing one – they fell 1-0 to a new look Everton. Jose Mourinho will be hoping to pick up three points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time this season.

Newcastle United, after an impressive transfer window, have also had a mixed start to the season. They dispatched fellow Londoners West Ham United, but then fell 3-0 against Brighton.

Both teams need to pick up consistent form in these early stages of the campaign, but that task certainly looks more daunting for the Magpies – with Spurs obviously the stronger side on paper.

Tottenham are fresh off the plane after their Thursday night encounter, where they faced Shkendija in the Europa League 2nd qualifying round.

Steve Bruce will be wanting his side could tap into this, with Spurs having to fight against match fitness and tiredness.

  • TEAM NEWS

New signings Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale will not feature on Sunday.

Bale is weeks away from making his return in a Lilywhite shirt, while the Spaniard is close – but his match fitness is not up to speed just yet.

Tanguay Ndombele, who played the full 90 minutes on Thursday, has been confirmed doubtful to make an appearance. It was his first full match in a while and Mourinho said that Spurs will see how he reacts.

Japhet Tanganga is still working his way back from his back injury and is unlikely he will be ready to face Newcastle.

The Magpies have a couple of fresh injury concerns – Allan Saint-Maximin and new signing Jamal Lewis are both ‘touch and go’ after picking up knocks against Brighton last weekend.

Republic of Ireland international Ciaran Clark also picked up an injury in the 7-0 victory against Morecambe - making him extremely doubtful for the fixture.

  • Predicted Line-Ups

Tottenham: Lloris (C), Doherty, Sanchez, Dier, Davies; Sissoko, Winks, Lo Celso; Lucas, Kane, Son.

Newcastle: Darlow; Manquillo, Fernandez, Lascelles, Krafth; Hayden, Shelvey; Fraser, Almiron, Saint-Maximin; Wilson.

  • LAST MEETING

The last encounter between the two sides only came around two months ago, where Spurs came out 3-1 winners during project restart.

It was during Spurs’ renascence towards the end of the season – where they made their late push for a Europa League spot.

Heung Min-Son opened the scoring with a smart low-shot, but the game was always still alive with scores only one apart, and Matt Richie pulled the game level with a rocket into the top corner.

The game was nicely balanced – but destiny arrived, and Harry Kane went onto score a brace to secure the win.

Spurs had less possession throughout the match, and this was one of the matches that were singled out to show Mourinho’s tactics seeping into his squad.

However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for Newcastle in this retrospect, as they defeated Tottenham in a stunning 1-0 win at the very start of the season.

New signing Joelinton scored his first goal for the club, but only went on to score one more throughout the entire campaign.

Bruce will be hoping history can repeat itself in an attempt to stun Spurs early in the season again.
