Mexico ended off their group stage games in the Toulon Tournament with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bulgaria.

Carlos Fierro's strike midway through the first-half was enough to decide the game, which never really got going.

There were moments of promise for Bulgaria but nothing more, as they failed to score once again.

Fierro gives Mexico the lead

The game began with an excellent early chance for Mexico, and their star-man, Fierro, was at the heart of the move. He made his way through midfield before sending Luis Lorona through on goal with a superb chipped pass. Unfortunately for Lorona, his toe-poke went narrowly over the bar.

The wind was at the Mexicans' backs and they made the most of that and the promising start. Bulgaria were deep on their own 18-yard box but a superb through ball from Arturo Gonzalez split them wide open. Fierro latched onto the deft pass and sent Georgi Kitanov the wrong way from close range.

Antoni Zdravkov was far from happy with his side's poor start and made a double change midway through the first half. Antonio Vutov and Dimitar Velkovski replaced Aleksandar Georgiev and Manol Chapov, after fairly ineffectual starts from both players.

Neither player, however, managed to force a single shot on goal after their introductions. Mexico continued to apply pressure but found the Bulgarians in resolute defensive mood. Yet, just when it looked like they would get to the break without issue, number Plamen Galabov went off with a thigh injury.

Dull second half

The second half began with Bulgaria battling back into the game after all the first half changes. Kiril Despodov was denied by a solid Raul Gudino save, and the 'keeper made another good stop in the early stages to keep his side ahead.

Mexico were more limited than in the opening period, but Rosario Cota's hooked effort came close to extend their lead with Kitanov beaten. Larona also had a great opportunity to kill the game off when he collected a cross, only for his touch to let him down and force him into a weak effort that was easily gathered.

Bulgaria and Despodov tried to force a way through late in the day but it proved too little, too late. Mexico finally earned their first win of the tournament but it was far from convincing. Bulgaria remain winless and face Mali in their final game to try and avoid finishing without a win in France.
