Winning just one game was enough for automatic qualification for Australia, who finished in second place in Group D.

They now face Group E leaders Brazil who qualified with a perfect nine points, without conceding a goal.

Many predict Australia flopping at this stage, considering in all other previous meetings with the ‘Canarinhos’ they have fallen short.

2007 saw Brazil beat Australia 3-2 at the quarter-final stage, whilst four years later they beat them again in the 2011 World Cup, this time 1-0 in the group stages.

The history of these two sides stretches further than the World’s biggest stage; at each of Australia’s Olympic appearances, they have been paired with Brazil, losing each time.

Despite this, there is still positivity and belief in the Australian camp and their right-winger Caitlin Foord explained that the goal was "to make it ouf of the group," and after doing just that, she stated that: "we could win the thing after playing those teams [USA, Sweden, Nigeria].

Getting through to the knockout stages is: "a big achievement in itself, no one really expected it," Foord explained that they had "gotten better" in every game, and that "there's a lot more to come from us.

"If we can play like that, there's no reason we can't beat any team.”

Australia's belief is reflected by their performances in the group stages. Although they only won one out of three games, they proved dangerous throughout.

They impressed in their second game in a 2-0 win over Nigeria but all eyes were on their first encounter with the best team in the World – USA.

A 3-1 score line didn’t tell the tale of how a spirited Australia side managed to hold off the World number one for a great part of the first 45 minutes.

This will give the Aussies great confidence knowing that despite their dominance, Brazil sit seventh in the World Rankings, only three above Australia.

Brazil are hungry for their first World Cup triumph

Painful fall downs in previous appearances in this prestigious competition will only fuel more passion to progress to the quarter-finals.

The closest they have come to lifting the trophy was in 2007 when they lost to Germany.

Brazil’s head coach Vadão explained that although they achieved their first goal, it is only the beginning:

“We accomplished our aim for the group. We played very good in the final game of the group stages - especially the players that had not played before that, they played very well.

"But our next games will be even more competitive and we will face even stronger teams. It is sudden death so we cannot afford to make any mistakes now.

"We have to focus and detail will be very important in this next stage, it is vital we keep our concentration and continue this run of form.”

Vadão also addressed the press and answered their questions regarding the change of team in the final group game:

Vadão also revealed the reasoning's behind the change of team in the final group game, stating that: "it was still important to win all the games and to come out top.

"Formiga had an ache in her tendon from the first game and if we were to qualify as we did do, we would spare her in the final game.

"Marta also had a sight knock and it would have been an unnecessary risk to play her when we were already through.

"If Marta does not play on Sunday [vs Australia] the president of the federation will fire me! She will participate in the game, she’s not injured it was a precaution. Marta will be playing on Sunday, that I can tell you for sure.”

Promising to be an exciting encounter with a lot of goalmouth action, these two spirited sides will fight it out today at the Moncton Stadium for an ever desired round of eight spot.
