The London born, Scottish international made his professional breakthrough at Edinburgh outfit Hearts of Midlothian where he initially plied his trade as a right-back.

He made his professional debut for Hearts at the tender age of 17 in a 2-0 victory over St Johnstone, just two weeks later he made his Europa League debut against Liverpool at Tynecastle.

Over the following few years Callum Paterson began to mould into a centre forward after his move to South Wales, using his physical prowess to cause problems for opposition defenders, encouraged by the tutorship of then Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock.

  • Young player of the season on three occasions

Along the way he picked up young player of the year award on three consecutive occasions, first for Hearts in the 2016/17 campaign and for Cardiff the next two years.

Warnock first moved him into central midfield before going pushing him even higher up the field, later stating this was because Paterson ‘Couldn’t defend’.

This was somewhat a masterstroke as Paterson went onto score or assist 29 goals in his 106 appearances for the Bluebirds, he also played a key part in their play-off campaign last season where he got 37 games under his belt.

However, he has found himself out of Neil Harris' plans after Kieffer Moore signed from Wigan Athletic for £2million.

He is likely to remain part of the attacking department as he moves back north to Sheffield WednesdayGarry Monk remained keen to add to his striking options, with the number 9 shirt being left unmanned before this arrival.

Not only does he bring a physical presence that the likes of Jordan RhodesElias Kachunga and Josh Windass don’t necessarily provide, he also brings character and a unique personality to any dressing room he enters.

  • Quirky celebrations teamed with a  never-say-die attitude

During his time in Wales and even as a youngster in Scotland he often caught the eye for weird and wonderful celebrations, accompanied with a never-say-die attitude which saw him become a fans favourite with both sets of supporters he has played so far played for.

This will see him fit right in with the dressing room that Wednesday chief, Monk has created down at Middlewood Road.

Owls fans can expect total commitment from a player that Bluebirds supporters, many of whom are very disappointed by the decision to sell, said always gave 100% for the cause.

What he lacks in technical ability and flair he makes up for in desire, hunger and energetic pressing, like every signing Monk has made; these are key attributes needed for Wednesday this season.

There will be some familiar faces when he joins up with the squad too; Kadeem Harris was trying to force his way into Warnock’s Cardiff side when Paterson joined from Hearts and he has also played alongside Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan while on international duty.

These will be international ambitions he hopes maintain and improve on with a move to Hillsborough, with currently 12 appearances for the Scottish national side at 25 years of age he still has plenty of time to add to that tally if he hits the ground running with The Owls.
