Liverpool made it three wins out of three at the start of their Premier League retention bid as they came past a resilient Arsenal side 3-1.

Jurgen Klopp's side were at their dominant best at Anfield as they had to come from behind to beat Mikel Arteta's men on Monday night.

Story of the match

The North Londoners came into the match having had the better of recent meetings between the two, however, Liverpool were in no mood for repetition.

After an assured opening 20 minutes which saw the visitors barely leave their own half with possession, the Gunners took a shock lead.

A rare foray into the Reds' final third lead to a cross into the Liverpool penalty area that should have been dealt with easily. Instead, Andy Robertson contrived to find Alexandre Lacazette with his clearance, leaving the Frenchman the simple task of finding the opening goal.

Like all good sides, and perhaps like an injured tiger Liverpool were stung and hit back almost immediately.

Mohamed Salah burst past Kieran Tierney inside the penalty area and saw his shot saved by Bernd Leno directly into the path of Sadio Mane with the goal at his mercy.

Deservedly back on level terms, the hosts weren't finished there for the half.

Robertson was in the mood for redemption as shortly after the half-hour mark the Scottish full-back arrived at the back post to receive another wonderful Trent Alexander-Arnold delivery, stabbing the ball beyond the German goalkeeper to put the Reds in front.

With a halftime lead intact Liverpool had been good value for their advantage and would be hopeful of another polished performance.

Despite an improved Arsenal impetus Klopp's men continued to dictate proceedings, although they couldn't kill the game off.

The lack of a decisive goal almost came back to hurt them as Lacazette beat the high line to go one on one with Alisson Becker.

But it was the Brazilian stopper who came out on top in the battle of the minds as the striker fired his shot into the considerable frame of the Reds' keeper.

With 10 minutes to go Diogo Jota replaced the outstanding Mane for his Liverpool Premier League debut.

The final big moments were all about the new Portuguese arrival as the forward strived for his first goal in a Red shirt, hitting the side netting with one before having the ball taken off his toes by Salah for another.

Eventually, Jota got his goal as he waited on the edge of the area, took the ball on his thigh before volleying home into the bottom right-hand corner to fittingly round off the performance.

Key takeaway

Perhaps an early message to anyone who doubted the Reds credentials to go on and defend their crown.

Having come past Chelsea and now Arsenal in their opening three fixtures, the signs are perhaps ominous for the rest of the league as the likely mainly rivals drop points.

This clash was the first of a doubler-header this week as the two sides meet once again on Thursday night in the Carabao Cup fourth round, also at Anfield.
