A 10 goal thriller resulted in Swindon Town winning their play-off semi-final to set up a final date with Preston North End at Wembley Stadium, despite drawing 5-5 with Sheffield United at the County Ground.

Swindon got off to the best possible start, taking the lead after just four minutes. Ben Gladwin beautifully drilled the ball into the bottom corner on the half-volley after Craig Alcock cleared the initial danger.

Things went from bad to worse for the travelling Sheffield United fans. Nine minutes in and the hosts were 2-0 up. Bob Harris pounced on a defensive error and squared the ball for Gladwin to tap in his second of the night.

Mark Cooper's side were full of confidence from the late win in the first leg and it all seemed a bit too much for the Blades.

The Robins were unstoppable and on 17 minutes, it was 3-0. Michael Smith managed to find space in the penalty area and slotted home to put is side firmly in charge of the game.

Nigel Clough's side finally made a mark on the game soon after, just two minutes in fact, when Jamie Murphy's attempted cross was deflected in to the net by Nathan Thompson.

This gave the travelling side something to build on and give them some confidence and seven minutes from half time, they got a second goal back. An absolute bullet header from Chris Basham had opened the game up yet again. The Blades midfielder scooped his body low to a Bob Harris cross, flicking it past Wes Foderingham, who perhaps should have got a hand to it.

Cooper and his side must have been dreaming of the Wembley final at 3-0 and let the Blades back in to the game.

Jermaine Hylton was brought down in the box by goalkeeper Mark Howard and Swindon were handed a penalty. They didn't want a repeat of the one in the first leg, where Gladwin saw his saved. It wasn't similar to that one, however, as Michael Smith cooly slotted home. Howard went the right way but couldn't get a hand to it.

United hit back immediately when forward Steven Davies, who had only been on the field for five minutes, headed in a low cross from Bob Harris to make it 4-3.

If the teams didn't think there were enough goals already, they soon changed that. Jonathan Obika beautifully work his way through the opposition defenders and calmly slotted past Howard in goal.

It seemed the game was more about quantity rather than quality, when the ninth goal of the evening was put in. Che Adams' initial shot was blocked, but fell to the feet of Matt Done who smashed home from close range.

With just three minutes remaining in the 90, the Blades were running out of time to attempt to reach the play-off final. Adams did his best to give his side the chance , when in the 90th minute, crashed the ball home to draw his side level on the night.

It was too little, too late for the visitors who will be furious with their start to the game and gift the home side a three goal lead after just 18 minutes.

The result means Swindon will play Preston North End in the final at Wembley on Sunday May 24th.
