Michael Keane has trained with England's senior squad for the first time after being called up by interim manager Gareth Southgate on Tuesday morning.

Southgate had named his initial squad on Sunday - shortly after Burnley were narrowly beaten by Arsenal, in which Keane starred for the Clarets - and the defender had been overlooked.

However, Stoke City's Glen Johnson, who was originally included in the 23-man squad for the Three Lions' World Cup qualifier against Malta, withdrew through injury.

That left the door open for Southgate to turn to Keane, with whom he had worked at Under-21 level. The 23-year-old centre-back has also featured for England's Under-19 and Under-20 teams.

After impressing for Burnley so far this season, Keane earns England call-up

Keane has been an ever-present at the back for Burnley this season, and has formed a solid partnership with Ben Mee as the Clarets have made an encouraging start to the campaign.

Last week, the former Manchester United man had told the Daily Mail that a call-up to the senior side was 'always at the back of my mind', adding: "I don't expect it, but I hope for it."

And now his hopes have been confirmed, Keane will hope to feature at some point against Malta at Wembley on Saturday or Slovenia on Tuesday.

He will be joined by club teammate Tom Heaton, who has become something of a regular presence in England squads of late.
