Following the culmination of the long-winded 2019/20 campaign, Reading have revealed their list of first-team players who have been released at the end of their contracts.

This is as well as loan players Matt Miazga, Lucas Boye, Ayub Masika and Pele returning to their parent clubs.

The team had already lost players before the list was revealed, with The Daily Mail reporting that youngster Danny Loader is rumoured to be close to a move to European giants Porto.

Gambian winger Modou Barrow has also left to join South Korean champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

The five released last week were:

The vastly experienced Welsh international has been at the club since the summer of 2012, when Brian McDermott's men were a newly promoted Premier League outfit.

However, the following eight years was mainly on a downward trajectory, with just two top half finishes in that time.

Ever the professional, he never complained or moaned about the situation, even when he found himself training with the youth team under Jose Gomes.

Despite his quality splitting the fan base, nobody can ever question his dedication or consistency, having made over 300 appearances for the club and being the most capped Welsh international of all-time.

Not a flashy player, just a solid full-back who does the job he does very effectively.

He will certainly not be out of football for long, with Neil Warnock and Middlesbrough already looking to snap him up ahead of the next campaign.

Another player who joined in the summer of 2012 - Gunter and McCleary are inseparable.

Having been together at previous club Nottingham Forest, the two live next door to each other and the Welshman is godfather to the winger's children.

Unfortunately, similarly to the right-back, the Jamaican international has had many more disappointments than success in a blue and white shirt.

Another of the senior players forced out by Gomes last season, the 30 year old has very much been an impact player from the bench for the last couple of seasons.

As much as he splits fan opinion, one thing is for sure though- no fan will ever forget some of his unstoppable goals.

From the volley against Burnley in 2014, to the dribble and strike at Loftus Road in the same season- but the one goal that will stick out will be the equaliser in the 2015 FA Cup Semi-Final against Arsenal.

With over 260 appearances, he will most definitely be missed around the place, but ultimately it was probably the best for both parties that he left this summer.

The versatile defender joined the club in 2016 and has enjoyed a mixed spell in Berkshire.

Early on in his Royals career he was a victim of the 'boo boys' as he put in some questionable performances.

However, over the last couple of seasons, he has turned it right around to become one of the better players in Mark Bowen's defence.

He has been a regular since joining the club, although he featured much less in 2019/20 than he had in previous campaigns.

He leaves a much better defender than when he joined as a 21 year-old,  and amassed over 100 appearances in four full seasons.

If the rumours are to be believed, the Mancunian may be off to Turkey or Belgium.

Jordan Obita

The release of Obita has certainly split opinion in the fan-base, with many arguing that he still has much to offer having only just come back from a two year injury lay-off.

The Academy graduate joined the club as an eight year-old in 2002 and progressed through the ranks to captain the side on occasion.

Originally a left winger, his debut came in 2010 aged 16.

He then went out on loan four times before playing again in August 2013.

It was not until the 2013/14 season that he really broke through- even winning the Player of the Season award as the club just missed out on the play-offs under Nigel Adkins.

Another player that has unfortunately been involved in under performing sides, he will always be remembered fondly.

Only three Academy graduates have made more appearances for the club than Obita with 191, and the moment the ball hit the back of the net against Millwall in November will live long in the memory following a difficult two year spell on the sidelines through injury.

Now aged 26, he still has a good opportunity to play himself back to his peak, at whatever level that may be.

The 34 year-old Scot only joined the club last summer, but he was firmly a fan favourite.

Affectionately dubbed 'The Scottish Pirlo', he played just 27 times for the club but not for a long time has the club had a better passer of the ball.

His experience and personality will no doubt be a huge loss off of the field too, with many fans hoping he may have done similar to John O'Shea and retired to take up a coaching role with the club.

Still with plenty to give, he will be a good addition to any club.

With Covid-19 and FFP to navigate, the club certainly will not be able to go out and splash the cash like they did last season.

However there will still be some in's, most notably midfielder Josh Laurent.

The former Shrewsbury Town player caught the eye of many against Liverpool in the FA Cup, and according to reports had interest from Bristol City, Stoke City, Swansea City and Cardiff City.

His contract is up at the League One club and so can walk away on a free, which suits Bowen and the transfer strategy.

According to BerkshireLive, the 25 year-old is due for a medical this week.

Yet to be linked to  many others, it is certainly going to be an interesting summer transfer window for the club.
