It was a relatively routine round of action in the Coupe de France Féminine this weekend as the quarter-finalists were revealed.

Some of the biggest teams remaining were dealt a slight scare or two, with one of them even taken to penalties by a lower league opponent, but status prevailed in the last 16 as the underdogs bowed out.

Dreams come to an end...

After successive victories on penalties got them to the last 16, third-tier Orvault SF finally saw their cup run come to an end at the hands of the biggest team in the land - Olympique Lyonnais - on Saturday.

Lyon emerged 12-0 winners on the day, more than comfortably downing their opponents. Eugenie Le Sommer stole the show with five goals, whilst Wendie Renard and Aurélie Kaci were both at the double.

Ada Hegerberg, Camille Abily and Louisa Necib completed the rout as the Division 1 Feminine leaders cruised into the last eight.

The other remaining third division side, Rennes, were also eliminated by a top flight opponent. Guingamp were their conquerors, winning 4-0 on the road to secure their place in the next round.

Faustine Robert broke the deadlock 36 minutes in, but it was the second half in which the visitors really showed their class - particularly at the start of it. Just 16 minutes after the restart, Guingamp had made their lead a devastating 4-0 one, with Laura Douessin, Salma Amani and Désiré Oparanozie all getting their names on the scoresheet as their side made it into the quarter-finals.

... But two second tier teams march on

Despite the elimination of both third division sides, the Division 2 Feminine still have two representatives in the competition. Neither got there by causing a real upset, but they were both made to really battle for their places in the round.

Dijon make up one half of the remaining pair, and their seven-goal thriller with Grenoble Claix was arguably the best tie of the round.

The hosts asserted themselves in the game early on, going two goals up inside 15 minutes thanks to strikes from Laura Bouillot and Ludivine Bultel. However, Grenoble were incredibly tough to shake off for the entire affair and halved the deficit on the 20 minute mark through Anaïs Ribeyra

Their persistence and never-say-die attitude made for a terrific tie, but they failed to do one huge thing in the game which was take the lead.

Gladys Boilard levelled things up at 2-2, but Dijon were able to establish a two-goal cushion again when Bultel added her second of the day and Ophélie Cuynet followed it up with a strike on 56 minutes.

Laury Jesus responded brilliantly for her side when she cut that lead to just the one goal again 60 seconds later, but, despite having over half an hour to find another equaliser, Grenoble could not get themselves back on level terms as Dijon saw the game out at 4-3.

They are joined in the next round by Metz, who narrowly defeated Val d'Orge 2-1 in the other all D2 tie. It was Val d'Orge who took the lead after 11 minutes on their own patch, with Corinne Lebailly on target, but the second half was perfectly poised at 1-1 thanks to Simone Gomes Jatoba.

From there, Metz had the momentum and they made it count, with Julie Wojdyla's 65th minute effort proving to be the match winning goal as the visitors made the trip home as the happier of the two, having secured their place in the last eight.

D1 dominate

The round was generally dominated by top flight sides, with six of the last eight being from the highest division. Two were eliminated, however, due to a couple of all D1 clashes, whilst another were so close to crashing out.

The latter, the team who rode their luck, was VGA Saint-Maur. Strugglers in the league, they came up against a D2 side in Bordeaux who really fancied their chances given the terrible form of their opponents.

Their hope was justified when they took the lead in the game, with Margaux Aime on target after only 25 minutes, but Lilia Boumrar responded within 12 minutes to equalise for Saint-Maur.

The tightness of the tie was too much, nonetheless, with the game going to extra time and then penalties, with 120 minutes of football unable to decide a winner. One had to emerge in the shootout, however, and it was the D1 side as they came out 4-2 victors having held their nerve.

As for the two D1 sides who crashed out, they were Nîmes Metropole Gard and Juvisy. The former fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Rodez, with Océane Saunier's brace the difference, whilst Paris Saint-Germain defeated Juvisy by the same scoreline. Lisa Dahlkvist and Erika were the scorers in that game.

Montpellier than complete the quarter-final line-up, having comfortably defeated D2 side Vendenheim 3-0. Viviana Asseyi, Sofia Jakobsson and Anouk Dekker had the D1 title contenders in a commanding position before the break, and it was one they maintained with relative ease.

The draw for the last eight will be made later this week as we enter the latter stages of the competition.
