Wolverhampton Wanderers hauled themselves out of the relegation zone with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Molineux.

Ruben Neves gave Wolves the lead just shy of the hour mark from the penalty spot and Jose Sa saved Brennan Johnson's spot kick to preserve a first win under interim manager Steve Davis.

Forest remain without a win since defeating West Ham in the second match of the season and remain second from bottom in the Premier League table.

Story of the match

Davis made two changes to the side that were defeated by Chelsea with Neves returning from suspension in place of Goncalo Guedes and Rayan Ait-Nouri coming in for Nelson Semedo.

Steve Cooper elected to make one change from the side that drew at home to Aston Villa as Neco Williams replaced Serge Aurier.

The hosts were quick out of the blocks as they created chances through the runs of Matheus Nunes, who was a danger man in the early stages.

Inside the opening ten minutes, Scott McKenna headed over the crossbar following a corner by ex-Wolves man Morgan Gibbs-White.

Adama Traore delivered a back post cross that was met by Ait-Nouri, but he did not trouble the Reds goal and Traore followed up by shooting wide.

The visitors created another opportunity with some slick build-up play, Emmanuel Dennis' cross falling for Williams only for the Welshman to see his effort inside the area deflected behind by Toti Gomes.

Six minutes from half time, Wolves came close to grabbing the opener when Ait-Nouri fired a left-footed shot wide before Traore's dinked cross was headed against the post by Max Kilman.

In the opening stages of the second half, Remo Freuler found Gibbs-White on the edge of the area and his curling shot was wide of the post.

On 56 minutes, the hosts opened the scoring.

Harry Toffolo was ajudged to have handled Traore's strike with his arm and after a VAR check, referee Thomas Bramall pointed to the spot.

Neves stepped up and found the bottom left corner despite Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson guessing the right way.

On the hour-mark, Gibbs-White had a free kick in a dangerous position, but he failed to hit the target.

Cooper attempted to freshen things up by making a double change on 70 minutes, Orel Mangala and Jesse Lingard replaced Cheikhou Kouyate and Dennis.

In the 77th minute, the Reds were given a lifeline, as Ryan Yates was fouled in the area by Nunes, and after a VAR check, the visitors were awarded a penalty.

They were not able to capitalise on the spot kick, as Sa saved Johnson's low strike to his left.

Sam Surridge and Taiwo Awoniyi were brought on for the visitors and soon after, a Gibbs-White free kick was headed across goal by Steve Cook, but Yates' header missed the target.

With the fourth official signaling for eight minutes of stoppage time, Joe Hodge was brought on for his home debut in place of Nunes while Hugo Bueno made his Premier League bow.

Despite the amount of time added on, Forest were unable to find an equalizer as they remain stuck on just one win for the season.

Player of the match: Adama Traore

For a second match on the bounce, he was Wolves' best player.

He created good openings for his teammates, particularly with his crosses, as well as winning the decisive penalty, giving Davis every reason to keep him in the starting lineup.
