York City exited the Emirates FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat to League One Shrewsbury Town in the First Round.

Salop were two goals up heading into first half injury time, but York's Manny Duku managed to pull one back just before the break, however, it wasn't enough to see them through, and Shrewsbury progressed.

Manager John Askey gave his thoughts after the cup elimination:

"I was proud of the players. I thought we started slowly again, lacked confidence early on, and once they realised that they were more than capable, then players started to play and in the second half, it looked as though we could possibly get something."

The second half saw a much better showing from City, and although neither side could nick a goal in the final 45 minutes, Askey was pleased with the performance.

"In the second half, you wouldn't have known a difference between the two teams. I thought we played the better football, but we just gave ourselves too much to do.

"They put up a good show against, obviously, a good First Division team."

  • On the goals

All three goals came in the first half, with the League One hosts taking the lead after two minutes with an easy tap-in, before doubling their advantage from the penalty spot in first half injury time. The deficit was immediately halved, as a header brought York back in the game just before the interval.

"It was a soft first goal and a poor penalty that we gave away, but again, we've gone and scored a really good goal.

"With a little bit of luck we might have just nicked something.

"(Our goal) was huge, because if we'd have gone in at 2-0, it would have been a completely different team talk, and I think we'd have been up against it.

"It was a really good goal that Manny scored, and to get that goal, it just gave us some belief."

  • On the fans

The Minstermen boss was rightly full of praise for the 540 away fans who had made the trip down to Shropshire, and felt they have a huge impact on the players.

"(The fans were) unbelievable today. Throughout the game, it was only the York supporters you could hear, and it was a fantastic following. They did everything they could to get behind the players."

"When you've got that, it can't help but inspire you as a player, and the players need to know they are very lucky to have that sort of following."

"We need to give the fans something to shout about. Obviously the most important thing is the league, it's always going to be the league, and we need to go to Boreham Wood, put up a good performance, and hopefully we can get three points."
