As the group stage of the UEFA Women's under-17 Championships drew to a close on Tuesday, the four teams to battle it out in the semi-finals were confirmed.
England and Norway through to the final four
England, once again, left it until the final 10 minutes to turn on the style against Serbia. They found themselves a goal behind at the break after Miljana Ivanović's strike in the final minute of normal in the first-half. Georgia Stanway then levelled from the spot before Isidora Vučković was then shown a straight red for a foul on Ellie Brazil. That seemed to be the turning point, as Brazil put England ahead with 12 minutes left. Niamh Charles and Hannah Cain scored late on to add some gloss to the 4-1 result.
The English were joined by Norway as the other team to make it out of Group A. It was a routine 2-0 win against Belarus, who mustered just one shot on goal throughout the game. Ingrid Olsen and Emilia Ruud grabbed the goals in the first period, before the team took their foot off the gas in the second 45. Darya Vinograd, Belarus' captain, made countless saves to keep the score respectable. The Norwegians go through in second, with England topping the group and maintaining their 100% record.
Germany follow Spain in Group B progression
Lorena Navarro starred for Spain again as they maintained their unbeaten record to seal top spot in Group B. María Blanco headed her side in front before she teed up Navarro to continue her fine goalscoring form. The same combination popped up after the break to make it 3-0, before Benedetta Glionna added a consolation for Italy soon after. The Spaniards will take on Norway in the semi-finals, and look good value to make it to the final following another confident performance.
Germany needed to better Italy's result to ensure their move into the semi-finals, and did that with ease. Vanessa Ziegler found the net twice before the break, with Marie Müller scoring either side of half-time to seal a comfortable 4-0 win over the Czech Republic and Germany's first win of the competition. It may have been a long time coming, but their semi-final against England now looks all the more interesting that they go into the game with a victory.
