Hull City earned a point in their first away match of the season as they played out a goalless draw against Preston North End at Deepdale.

Goalkeeper Matt Ingram was outstanding, producing a number of fine saves to keep the Lilywhites off the scoreboard.

The Tigers have earned four points from their opening two league matches while Preston have yet to score in 180 minutes of action.

Story of the match

Hull manager Shota Arveladze made one change to the side that defeated Bristol City with Tyler Smith absent.

Ryan Lowe made no changes to the side that drew with Wigan on the opening day, Daniel Johnson the captain for this match to mark his 300th appearance in a Preston shirt.

The Lilywhites were on the front foot early, a knockdown by Troy Parrott finding Emil Riis, whose drive was palmed away by Ingram.

Robbie Brady then fired straight at Ingram from 20 yards away before the Tigers goalkeeper dropped a far-post cross before claiming at the second time of asking.

On the half-hour mark, Benjamin Tetteh stood up a cross for Jacob Greaves that he glanced wide, Oscar Estupinian was then off-target with an angled drive and Lewie Coyle curled over.

At the other end, Daniel Johnson, making his 300th appearance in a Preston shirt, picked out Brady, whose left-footed shot was over.

No reward for Preston’s pressure

Two minutes after the restart, Brady thought he had put the Lilywhites in front as the Republic of Ireland international’s driven shot was deflected and clattered the post.

Parrott was next to test Ingram, saving the narrow-angle shot before parrying the Tottenham loanee's 25-yard curler.

In between those two shots, Hull registered their first shot on target, Regan Slater stinging the palms of Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

Arveladze brought on Vaughn Covil and moved Allahyar Sayyadmanesh up front with Callum Elder coming on at left wing-back.

Brady then sent in a cross that caused problems for the Tigers defence with a stretched Alan Browne firing into the side-netting.

Seven minutes from time, a long ball played Parrott into space, but his shot was blocked by the legs of Ingram and eventually cleared away.

Both teams will now turn their attention to the first round of the Carabao Cup with Hull away to Bradford City and Preston facing Huddersfield Town.

Man of the match: Matt Ingram

He was the best player on the pitch by miles. Two early saves got him into the flow of the game as he went on to deny Parrott twice and kept out Browne in key moments.
