The odds were firmly stacked against Fulham in a game which many expected would be a walk in the park for Liverpool. Fulham however were not intimidated by the prospect of facing last season's Cup double winners and certainly put on a show for their fans in the early kick off, giving them hope for the season ahead that they can escape relegation.

Liverpool were punished for their lacklustre start as Aleksandar Mitrovic leaped above Trent Alexander-Arnold at the far post to put the hosts 1-0 up.

The Reds then equalised through Darwin Nunez who opened his account on his Premier League debut with a clever finish.

Mitrovic then doubled his tally from the penalty spot after a rare mistake by Virgil Van Dijk who fouled the Serbian.

Mohammed Salah rescued Liverpool a point late on but ultimately this will feel like a loss for the travellers, knowing that Manchester City don't slip up very often

  • Jordan Henderson And Roberto Firmino Struggle

Liverpool's captain looked out of his depth as he failed to cope with the intensity in the middle of the park. Henderson won zero ground duels,  only completed 73.8% of his passes and lost the ball 19 times.

Henderson, along with the rest of the midfield, constantly lost possession and failed to grab ahold of the game. His days as a starter on the right-hand side of midfield are numbered as Liverpool are expected to sign a new midfielder next summer - Jude Bellingham being the number 1 candidate for the role.

It was also a day to forget for Roberto Firmino. Many Liverpool fans would have been surprised to see his name on the team sheet after Darwin Nunez' excellent performance against Man City. And rightly so.

The Brazilian created very little and provided zero threat up top. He didn't do himself any favours in asserting himself as Liverpool's number 9 over Nunez, who changed the game when he entered the pitch. It would be a shock to see him continue to start over the Uruguayan.

  • Liverpools midfield injurys starting to pile up

After their poor performance, the last thing Liverpool needed was their best midfielder to go off injured. Thiago was clutching his hamstring early on in the second half, forcing Klopp into an early change.

The Spaniard joins Curtis Jones, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the sidelines, slimming down the midfield even more.

He could be out for a while, with Jurgen Klopp stating to BT Sport "It looks like a bad hamstring".

It remains to be seen if this impacts the decision to bring in a midfielder this summer, with many fans believing this should have been a priority anyway. After all, it is fine margins that decide League titles and not recruiting a midfielder this summer could prove to be costly.

  • Rare Van Dijk Error

It looks like he is human after all. Van Dijk was not at his usual impenetrable best today as he tripped Mitrovic in the box, conceding a penalty. Despite his strong protests, the penalty was awarded and the Serbian converted from the spot to put Fulham 2-1 up.

It ended Liverpool's run of 51 Premier League matches without giving away a penalty, which was the longest ongoing run in the competition (Opta).

  • Salah Strikes for the sixth opening day in a row

Salah has scored on the opening day the last six years, following strikes against Watford, West Ham, Norwich, Leeds, Norwich and Fulham today.

He is always setting new records as no other player has even scored in five of the opening games. Over the six games, Salah has scored eight goals - the only other players to achieve this feat being Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard.

To make it even more impressive, the Egyptian has completed this in less than half the amount of appearances as the others.
