Barry Bannan was the star of the day as Sheffield Wednesday demolished Forest Green Rovers on Saturday afternoon.

The Scottish midfielder notched his first goal of the season and created another three for his teammates as his side put the League Two champions to the sword at Hillsborough.

Further goals from Josh Windass and Liam Palmer preceeded a brace from Lee Gregory as The Owls ensured their first ever meeting with Forest Green left a bitter taste in the mouth of the visitors.

The hosts were looking to continue their fine run of form, having won five out of their last six games before todays game.

That form was a stark contrast to that of their visitors, who had won just two out of the same amount of games.

Wednesday made nine changes to the side that saw off Rochdale in midweek, as David Stockdale, Michael Ihiekwe, Lee Gregory, Barry Bannan, Josh Windass, George Byers, Marvin Johnson, Tyreeq Bakinson and Liam Palmer came into the side.

The visitors also changed the team that lost 3-0 to Premier League residents Brighton, with Jamille Matt, Jordan Moore-Taylor, Kyle McAllister, new signing Miles Peart-Harris, David Davis and Reece Brown entering the starting 11.

Story of the game

The hosts kicked off with a strong spell of pressure against their out-of-form opponents, and threatened just five minutes in as Tyreeq Bakinson was slotted in by Barry Bannan, but a strong Baily Cargill slide tackle denied the forward at the last second.

Their early pressure paid off well though through the ever-brilliant Bannan, who's ball across to the back post to Palmer was struck on goal, but a brilliant Cargill block off the line fell straight to Windass, who made no mistake to open the scoring with 12 minutes on the clock.

They came close to a second moments later as a driving run from Iorfa resulted in a pull-back to Gregory, but the strikers effort was blocked.

The lead was doubled after 20, and it was Bannan who turned from creator to scorer. Dom Bernard screwed a clearance from a Wednesday long-ball behind him, and waiting was the Scotsman to loft the ball over Luke McGree with one touch.

A moment of magic from one of the finer players in the league, and a fine way for the Owls captain to open his account for the season.

The one-way traffic simply didn't stop in the first half, as five minutes later a delicious right-sided cross from Windass was just nudged wide by Gregory.

The Owls grabbed a deserved third after 32 minutes and, you guessed it, it was Bannan who provided a fine assist from a dead ball.

The Scotsman quickly knocked a free-kick over the top of everyone to pick out Palmer beautifully on the right hand side, and after a slightly heavy touch saw McGree block the first attempt, the academy graduate made no mistake with a follow-up to blast his side into the ascendancy.

A lovely corner to the back post from Windass at the end of the half found Palmer wonderfully once again, but his firm header sailed just over the bar.

Gregory finally got in on the act at the death of the first half, as more excellent creative work from Bannan saw him cut in off the left hand side and screw the ball through to the striker, who laced home past McGree emphatically.

It was so close to a fifth with the last kick of the half, as yet another Bannan ball fell to Byers, who saw his right-footed attempt float back into the grateful arms of McGree by way of the left post, moments before the whistle went to finally give Forest Green a moment to rest.

The second half saw little reprieve from Wednesday, as the ever-troublesome Palmer was hauled down in the area by Moore-Taylor, but referee Simon Mather waved away the protests.

Johnson was next to test McGree as an optimistic effort from the left sailed straight into the goalkeepers midriff.

There were still more goals to come by way of Gregory again, as a Bakinson cross was diverted in, but it was debatable whether or not it came in off the unfortunate Bernard or the Wednesday frontman.

There was to be a debut for Malik Wilks in the end, as he replaced Windass with 68 minutes played. Off also went Gregory for Callum Paterson and the incredible Bannan for Dennis Adeniran.

Wilks saw a half-chance to make a mark on his debut with five minutes to go, as he cut in from the right to screw a left-footed effort low past the post from a tight angle.

He nearly added a spectacular sixth right at the death with an acrobatic strike from Byers' cross, but McGree pulled off an amazing save to deny him the perfect debut.

Forest Green had zero answer to the Sheffield sides onslaught and were soundly sent back home with nothing but a dreadful showing to look back on.

Player of the match

This will not surprise anyone.

Barry Bannan walks away with today's player of the match award, as deserving as a player could be.

He absolutely ran his opposition ragged today. Nobody could touch him and with three assists and a goal, they were made to pay for it.
