Wrexham comfortably advanced to the second round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 victory over Oldham Athletic at the Racecourse Ground.

Sam Dalby scored his second goal of the season after just ten minutes as the Dragons were off and running.

Leading scorer Paul Mullin scored either side of halftime to seal Wrexham's place in the second round for the first time since 2018.

Story of the match

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson made two changes to the side that edged past Maidenhead United as Dalby and Callum McFadzean came into the starting lineup.

The Dragons were on the front foot within minutes of kick-off, a cross by Anthony Forde that Dalby got his head to only to see Jayson Leutwiler collect.

On seven minutes, a cheeky back-heel by Elliot Lee found Mullin, whose shot took a deflection off David Okagbue and over the crossbar.

Three minutes later, the hosts were in front. Leutwiler could only parry Luke Young's long-range effort, leaving Dalby with the simplest of tap-ins.

Olaham looked to respond through Ben Tollitt, who worked his way down the left, but the ex-Wrexham man's cross was too close to Dragons goalkeeper Mark Howard. Later on, Tammy Abraham fired wide.

The hosts were applying more pressure, Nathan Sheron needing to block McFadzean's shot before the hosts doubled their lead as Dalby played in Mullin, who cut inside the box and wrongfooted Leutwiler.

Before the halftime break, Young could have put the tie out of sight, but his rasping drive flashed harmlessly past the post.

Latics boss David Unsworth introduced Mike Fondop at halftime with Jordan Clarke and the substitute and he tried to make an immediate impact, his shot blocked by Jordan Tunnicliffe.

Fondop then linked up with Abraham, who saw his effort blocked by McFadzean. Sheron put in a cross that Abraham headed toward goal, but Howard had little trouble with it.

Just after the hour mark, the tie was put to bed as a long throw by Ben Tozer was glanced home by Mullin at the back post, as he celebrated his 28th birthday in style.

Minutes later, the hosts were pushing for a fourth, Lee seeing two chances cleared off the line and Leutwiler parried Mullin's effort.

Bryce Hosannah then embarked on a mazy run between two Oldham defenders and went to ground, but no penalty was given.

Mullin came within inches of a hat-trick when Thomas O'Connor sent the ball across the box, but the Dragons talisman couldn't connect on it.
