Iran will leave the tournament having exceeded expectations with a win and a close shave with a far superior team.

Meanwhile, Berhalter is complaining to the officials that Iran are time-wasting.

29' Josh Sargent spins to shoot, it deflects off a leg of an Iran defender. The ball lands on the head of Weah eight yards out, but it lacks power and Beiranvand comfortably saves.

26' It hasn't been the same electric performance from the USA star man as it was against England and his corner is nowhere near.

23' The Dragons need a draw here and a victory over the Three Lions to progress to the last 16.

21' Taremi and Azmoun are loose in the USA area. Taremi knocks it to his talisman, but Tim Ream makes a vital interception.

19' Plenty of neat build-up play as in the first two matches, but so far, no one on hand to apply the finishing touch for the Americans.

16' Robinson has been the best US player so far and his cross is just beyond the reach of Tim Weah, who has the only goal of the tournament for Berhalter's side.

Sergino Dest then drives in a cross that Alireza Beiranvand punches away. The Stars and Stripes best chances are coming when play is started out wide.

13' Robinson has found space down the left with Carter-Vickers in support, as well. Pulisic gives the ball away, but Iran do very little with it, knocking it about.

9' Tyler Adams meant for that to be a shot, but it winds up being a decent cross-field pass to Antonee Robinson. The cross is dealt with, but the captain scampers back to shut down an Iran counterattack.

Musah has the clearest chance of either side so far, but lashes over from just outside the area.

6' Yunus Musah, on his 20th birthday, wins a throw after good work down the right, but Iran clear. USA have had the better of it, but the Middle Easterners have a good passage of play after shaky defending.

3' A set-piece from 40 yards out is dealt with and USA attack with Christian Pulisic taken down by Hossein Hosseini as he tried to get into the penalty area.

Group A was already decided as the Netherlands finished top of the pile after goals from Cody Gakpo and Frenkie De Jong saw them past hosts Qatar 2-0.

Senegal finished second as the Lions of Teranga edged past Ecuador 2-1 as Kalidou Koulibaly scored the match-winner in the 70th minute.

The Oranje face the Group B runner-up while Aliou Cisse's Senegal take on the Group B winner.

Carlos Quieroz has made one change to his starting lineup, but it's a crucial one as starting goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand returns after missing the match against Wales with a concussion and broken nose.

Hossein Hossieni, who started in place of Beiranvand, will be amongst the substitutes.

Manager Gregg Berhalter continues to shuffle his forwards with Cameron Carter-Vickers seeing his first action of the tournament and Josh Sargent restored to the starting XI.

Haji Wright, who started against England, has been dropped to the bench.

Iran showed great fighting spirit to stun Wales after going up a man in the closinmg stages of the match, scoring twice and are a compact, solid defensive squad.

However, based on the display put forth by USA against a far superior England side, where the Stars and Stripes ran the game from the midfield, were industrious in attack and used their high press to great effect, they have a big advantage in this one.

Expect drama and tension, but USA should win.

Prediction: Iran 1-2 USA

These two sides have only met twice before.

Iran won the first matchup in the 1998 World Cup group stage which was, like here, the last match of the three. Second-half goals from Hamid Estili and Mehdi Madivikia gave the Middle Easterners a 2-1 victory.

Two years later at the Rose Bowl, a friendly match saw Mahdavikia and Chris Armas exchange goals in a 1-1 draw.

Did an excellent job to shut down Wales' threat on the left and sent in some fine crosses. Capped his display with Iran's second goal.

The striker had a magnificent game against England, hitting the crossbar and being at the heart of all of the positive play that the Americans had.

By contrast, Carlos Quieroz's side earned just their third all-time match win at the World Cup after defeating Wales 2-0, a result that leaves them a result away from the Round of 16 for the first time in their sixth appearance at the global showpiece.
