Lampard: ‘I’m thinking of where we want to go and how we need to improve’

Ahead of what will be the shortest break between Premier League campaigns in history, Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard reflected on a good start to life in the SW6 hot-seat, as well as what his team can become with improvement.

A 4th placed finish, securing the top level of continental club football for next season, as well as two runners-up medals, showing that all in all, Chelsea's all-time leading goal scorer’s first campaign in charge, has been a largely successful one.

Although, he has a long way to go to emulate the success he had as player at Stamford Bridge

One thing in Lampard’s armoury will always remain, that being his meticulous work-rate, as well as his inability to switch off, though he is looking forward to going away for a short-period to refresh his mind.

A tireless work-rate

Speaking to Chelsea’s in-house media team, the former England international stated: “I always look at things.

“I do it every night, I sit there, and I assess things. I think going away from football now for a week or so will help with the reflection, we can recharge and refresh. But I’m already thinking about next season.

“I’m thinking of where we want to go and how we need to improve. That game [versus Bayern] showed that we can compete, certainly the young players, but also highlights how much work there is for us to get to the level we want to be at.”

A new Blue era has also been heralded during this campaign, with new heroes created for Chelsea supporters across the land.

With the new and also young talent that Lampard had at his disposal, there were sceptics from far and wide that Chelsea would fail to reach the top six, let alone the top four.

Learning from experiences

On the players’ high level of performance to have a good campaign, top level games and comparison with former generations of Blues star, the former Derby County manager continued: “I’ve been there myself as a player. Going into Champions League games and realising how high the level is, and it’s about how you react to those experiences and come back from them.

“I’ll certainly be on at the players to remember that as we go away, but I have to say, I’m really proud for the effort and the togetherness that they’ve shown this season.

“I think a lot of people would have written us off this year. When you think of Chelsea eras just gone, of prime [Eden] Hazards, and [Didier] Drogba’s and [John] Terry's and [Petr] Cech’s, it looked different this year and the players have fought for everything.

"I hope the fans have appreciated that fight, we certainly appreciate their support, and I can promise them that we will be doing everything we can to keep moving forward.”
