West Bromwich Albion got their EFL Championship up and running as the Baggies cruised to a 5-2 victory over Hull City at the Hawthorns.

Starting the day in the bottom three, the hosts were fortunate to be in front as Callum Elder scored into his own net.

John Swift doubled West Brom's advantage three minutes after the restart, beating Matt Ingram from the edge of the penalty area and Darnell Furlong added a third.

It became 4-0 when Karlan Grant converted from the penalty spot and despite a double from Oscar Estupinan, a simple finish by Dara O'Shea ensured the Baggies' sixth conescutive victory against the Tigers.

The hosts jump up nine places to 13th while Hull, who started the day second in the table, drop to sixth.

Story of the match

West Brom manager Steve Bruce made just one change from the side that drew with Cardiff City as Jayson Molumby came in for Jake Livermore.

Shota Arveladze also made one change to a Hull side that picked up a point against Burnley last time out, Randell Williams taking the place of the injured Allahyar Sayyadmanesh.

The visitors started well, forcing David Button into a pair of early saves from an Ozan Tufan volley followed by Estupinan's strike that was pushed onto the crossbar.

After a corner by the Baggies, Hull broke the other way with Estupinan, Tufan and Elder involved in the build-up, the latter watching as his fierce drive was parried by Button.

At the other end, Furlong sent one to the back post that was met by Grady Diangana, but he could only send his shot wide.

Ryan Woods set up the Tigers' next chance, playing Estupinan through on goal and his first-time strike was pushed onto the crossbar by Button, who then gathered in the loose ball.

On 38 minutes, West Brom were in front. A Jed Wallace cross from the right flank caused problems in the penalty area and Elder accidentally diverted into his own net.

Three minutes into the second half, the lead was doubled as Diangana laid the ball off for Swift and his low, left-footed effort beat Ingram and secured his first competitive goal for the Baggies.

Moments later, Ingram had to be alert to the danger as he parried Swift's free-kick, but after failing to clear their lines, Hull allowed Furlong to finish into the right corner.

Grant looked to grab the hosts' fourth, only the feet of Ingram denying him and at the other end, Williams clattered one off of the crossbar.

A 15 minute goal flurry

With 20 minutes to go, West Brom were given a penalty that Grant converted despite Ingram guessing the right way.

Seven minutes later, the Tigers were on the scoresheet as Benjamin Tetteh picked out the run of Estupinan, who finished from inside the penalty area.

Diangana's near-post strike hit the frame of the goal before O'Shea added a fifth at the back post.

Estupinan would get his brace in the 89th minute as his curling effort beat a diving Button into the far corner, but it was too late as Hull slumped to their first defeat on the season.

Player of the match: Grady Diangana

The forward looks to be back to his old self as he was bullying the Hull full-backs, tracking back and winning critical challenges to cut off any threatening passages of play by the Tigers.

He picked up an assist and was unfortunate not to get a goal that his performance deserved as he hit the post.
